Question on Thyroid test results

Hi, I was wondering if anyone is familiar with determining thyroid test results...I was diagnosed last year with Hashimoto's (and with Lyme disease 3 yrs ago). Your comments are welcome - thanks!

The following were in the normal range:
TSH - range 04.50-4.50 ulu/ml - my result was 2.180
T3 - range 71-180 ng/dl - my result was 86
T4 (free,direct) - range 0.82-1.77 ng/dL - my result was 0.94
Thyroglobulin by LCMS - range 1.5-38.5 - my result was 1.8


However, the following were high:

My TPO Ab was high - range 0-34 IU/ml - my result 67
My TgAb + IMA or LCMS high - range 0.0-0.09 IU/mL - my result was 32.4

My TSH was down from the previous month when it was at 6.89 from the same lab (no other thyroid test then, only TSH). After this result, my Lyme doc started me on Naturethroid 0.05 gm 1/day so he was very pleased that the TSH was down. My family doc, who was actually the doc who ordered the last two lab tests ordered an Ultrasound of the thyroid after the last test results.

The Ultrasound showed two small nodules on my Thyroid. My family doc has now referred me to an Endocrinologist who isn't available until August. I've read that nodules are common at my age (59, female).

Yes, per the TPO test , you have Hashi.

You say you started nature throid, and these test results are from you being on the med for at least 6 weeks?

If youve been on the med 6 weeks, you levels are still a little low. But it feels better to slowly ramp up the med- too fast too soon and you feel hyper. It it common knowledge to feel best with at least FT4 or FT3 up into 2/3 rds of the range- you are not quite there yet.

Forget TSH, its not a hormone your cells use, its only a signal. Anyone who says go by TSH only needs there head examined, including any Drs who think so.

Nodules are even common win people with out thyroid issues. Drs generally track nods that are bigger than 10mm (1cm) in any direction.

Thanks for your input. Interesting about TSH - ok, I won't pay too much attention to that, good to know! Actually, those test results were after being on NatureThroid for only 2 weeks, just 1 tab/day (0.05gm).

The only way I found out about Hashimoto's was through bloodwork my Lyme doc ordered, because I really didn't have any symptoms other than dry lines on my fingernails and sometimes fatigue. On the whole I feel pretty good.

I was really hoping to avoid any medication and just try to correct the thyroid issue through diet, i.e. gluten-free etc., but I guess we're dealing with a different thing when it comes to an auto-immune disease like Hashimoto's, right?

I just received a copy of my Ultrasound report. Seems I have two nodules on the left lobe of 1.1 cm each. On the right lobe I also 1 nodule and 1 cyst, both smaller than 1 cm.

Now that you have a Hashi's diagnosis, get tested for celiac disease (simple blood test) before you go gluten free. You can develop other autoimmune disorders at any time and the link between Hashi's, Celiac Disease and Type 1 Diabetes is great. Do the research.

Thyroid replacment is a hormone -- not a medication. Dietary changes can help -- help anyone to be healthy, but it can not replace hormones if you need them.

I have Hashi's (antibodies over 2,000) with nodules. Then nodules and thyroid enlargement resolved after my CD diagnosis. I am still on Armour thyroid but feeling great. No crazy swings!

Why get diagnosed? Helps the doctor look for hidden damage like osteoporosis. Plus, CD is genetic for sure. You could help your first degree relatives from suffering.
