Hello everyone! I am 35 and I have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and Hypothyroidism. Does anyone else here have both of those? I'm really frustrated because I'm finding it difficult to find a doctor to treat both my conditions without me having to see a reproductive endo for PCOS and a regular endo for Hypo ...
Anyhoo, I was on Levoxyl for about 3 years and Metformin for my PCOS. I did notice a definite improvement in how I feel but there are still things that are making me wonder if my issues are under control. For the first time in my life, I no longer gain weight steadily every year... in fact I have lost 35 pounds and I'm actually able to maintain my weight. My periods have normalized but I still bleed for like 7-10 days and I noticed my nails are not so brittle anymore and I generally don't feel so yucky.
My TSH number has been steady now at 1.9 where before it was 5.9 and I was on 75 mcg of Levoxyl but now that they stopped making it I have been switched to Synthroid of the same mcg. I'm taking brand name of this.
However, I'm still having some symptoms... My hair still falls out like crazy, my skin is still messed up (dry, flakes off...mostly on my arms and legs), I'm tired all the time no matter how much I sleep and I'm still having issues with swollen hands and feet. I actually stopped taking my Metformin a few weeks ago to see if the swelling improved and it actually did... which I thought was weird.
The more annoying thing is since I got switched to Synthroid I get these really annoying heart palpatations. Like I can actually feel my heart beating and then it will do 3 beats in a row that are really hard and thunderous. It doesn't happen all the time though. I did notice that it seems to happen more often if I allow myself to have caffeine or even 1 drink ... sometimes too much salt seems to make it happen as well. So, I'm vowing to totally swear off caffeine and alcohol.
I also have a vitamin D difficency that I've been struggling with for years. My reproductive endo thought maybe I had Celiac disease since I can't seem to absorb vitamin D even when I take 50,000 units a week.
Anyhoo, I know the majority of the answers are going to be go see your doctor! :D Which I'm totally going to do ... my husband just got out of the hospital after having major surgery and its really hard to do for yourself when you're taking care of someone else... I just wanted to see if other people were taking medication for their thyroid but still suffering some of the symptoms even though their TSH levels are normal
