I recently went to dr. because of severe fatigue and depression. about 10 years ago I was told I had autoimmune thyroid and that it could take years for my thyroid to start going bad. The dr. did lab work and here are the results. Not quite understanding. I'm going to endocrinologist August 9th but it looks like most is normal. Is it worth me spending my money on a endocrinologist. I also have sjogrens and possible lupus. thanks for your help.

TSH 0.181 Range is 0.450-4.500
T4 7.1 Range is 4.5-12.0
T3 Uptake is 32 Range is 24-39
Free Thyroxine is 2.3 and Range is 1.2 -4.9

Are these the numbers from 10 years ago?
Your TSH is extremely low, which indicate hypER.
Do you have the results of the antibodies tests that were done 10 years ago?

These are the test that were run last week. I don't have the test from 10 years ago and i think the doctor i had then retired. Even though my tsh is low but the others are normal doesn't that make my results normal? I've been reading so much on this stuff and getting more confused. I've had horrible symptoms. Heart palpitations, heart flutters, just sweating profusely sitting in an air conditioned room, severe fatigue and it just goes on and on. UGH.

No, Low TSH means that your gland is suppressed, and this in turn can cause symptoms, in other words, it is the fact that your TSH is not balanced, either low (hypER) or high (hupo) that cause symptoms even though the other tests are normal.

These are typical Hyperthyroidism symptoms, do you have also weight loss?

No weight loss. I recently lost 8 lbs but within 2 weeks time gained it all back and I'm not a heavy eater. Didn't quite understand that part of the fast weight gain. Do the dr's treat a low tsh w/normal t3 and t4?

And that weight loss was due to me dieting.

They are supposed.

I don't have hyper, but there are many options, first is antithyroid meds like Methimazole, next RAI, and surgery .
You might want to ask your doctor to order Ultrasound of your neck, this will reveal if you have nodules, some times they -when present- can leak hormones independently and as a result cause hypER.

Also to know if you have autoimmune Graves disease, ask for thyroid antibodies, these are TPOab,TGab and TSI.

If you are on anti-depressants.. that too can cause weight gain. I, as well as many others have had that problem. I switched meds to one that can cause weight loss(hopefully) and am dieting and exercising. At least I got off the one I suspect of my unnatural gaining... Usually meds in the SSRI group tend to do this. Just a thought..

MaryDorr, low thyroid function can cause weight gain, although the thyroid alone rarely causes more than a 20 pound gain. Other symptoms are listed in our "Thyroid Basics" thread if you're interested in learning about them.

By far the most common cause of weight gain is simply an increase in the amount eaten or a decrease in the amount of exercise you're getting. If neither of these apply to you, your doctor can help sort out if some medical issue is affecting your weight. Hypothyroidism is only one of many conditions that can be accompanied by weight gain.
