Hi  I'm just coming off of amitriptyline (25mg) Oct 13th. I have been trying to loose weight for years and did so, but was unable to keep it off . I found out that amitriptyline was not helping at all.  I was put on it years ago because of headaches and my back was unbearable.  I'm 5' tall and weigh 164 lbs. I also have copd. The weight makes it impossible to move much if I want to breath. I want to know how long it takes to get it out of my system.  I have a Dr's appointment on Monday. I want a full panel done on my thyroid as I seem to have a lot of those symptoms as well. I feel like I've been run over with a mack truck. I have quite a bit of stress in my life as I am looking after my husband who has alzeitymers. I'm 67 yrs old and feel like 90. Any feedback would be helpful and appreciated.

Amitriptyline is generally prescribed as a mild antidepressant, so I'm not surprised it didn't help with your weight loss. Weight loss isn't even an off-label use or a side effect. Sometimes doctors will prescribe anti-depressants because they think we gain weight due to depression. This is usually incorrect. I know it can take two to three weeks for the medication to take effect, so would assume it would take about the same amount of time to clear your system.

Please do let us know what your thyroid panel shows, including the reference numbers. It's really difficult to identify thyroid issues solely from symptoms, because the symptoms of thyroid problems are pretty non-specific.

I was at the doctor today and asked for a full panel on thryoid and he informed me that it's not done in Canada. He said my thryoid was tested a year ago and everything was ok.

I'm sorry you weren't able to get any help. The only thing I can think of to suggest is to check and see if there is an appeal process through your health service. In the US, insurance companies are required to have this process, but don't know how your national health service works.
