I am just wondering if being hypothyroid causes anxiety? I am not currently on any medication so its not overmedication .. thanks

Yes , hypO can cause anxiety. More common with Hashimoto, vs regular low thyroid.

This forum is like a morgue lately LOL. no ones home.......

I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism, i was put on levothyroxine about a month ago. Returned recently to draw blood to check levels and adjust my dose. My Tsh was at 22 now its 3.3. But after changing my dose my anxiety seems to be off the charts! I asked my doctor about if i have hashimotos. He said it would show in my antibodies, and didnt see any reason to check since my body is reacting to the treatment of the levothyroxine. I just dont feel like my normal self. I know it takes a while to find the right dose. Im on my 4th day of the higher dose and lastnight, my anxiety was through the roof!! I was panicking for basically no reason, almost was going to go to the ER but i just did some breathing excercises to calm myself down and went to bed. I just woke up and i still feel the same and took my daily dose. Is this normal until i get my thyroid stabilized on the right dose? Im only going to my regular doctor. Should i involve an endoctrine doctor? Just not sure how to go about these strange feelings with my hormones out of whack!

Chelsea,

I would suggest getting a second opinion. To rule out Hashimoto's, a thyroid antibodies panel should be ordered. Granted, if diagnosed with Hashi's, your treatment would most likely be the same -- thyroid replacement. But you would know if you were dealing with an autoimmune issue.

Anxiety could be related to something else. Best to rule out autoimmune thyroiditis (common sense, I am not a doctor).

Chelsea, I have Hashimotos and i to experience anxiety. You can go to shoppersonal labs.com and order your own antibodies test and check it that way. I don't understand why your doctor is reluctant to test you for it. That was the only thyroid test that came back abnormal for me. I have right lobe of thyroid taken out and i am on 75mcg of levothyroixine. Anxiety is awful i hope you are feeling better. Best of luck

After reading thyroid forums for 15 years, "can hypothyroid causes anxiety?".

- Seems like yes. I think its more common with Hashimoto vs regular hypo though.

Remember autoimmune disorders are just a local symptom of the big autoimmune picture itself. Cant wait for the day they fix autoimmune vs treating the symptoms. Thyroid RX is, in a way, treating a symptom. Its a hormone, not really medicine, but still, they need to figure out autoimmune - so all the autoimmune diseases go away.
