Hello Everyone,

First of all I hope everyone is having a good holiday season.

Have any of you had sudden attacks of severe pain associated with the colitis?

On Christmas morning I had about a five minute attack of really severe lower abdominal pain associated with the shakes and fever, and an urge to go to the washroom. My parents think it could have been me passing a kidney stone (found in an earlier ultrasound), but talking to a nurse today she thinks it doesn't sound like a kidney stone.

In the couple of days before this attack, I had a feeling that the colitis was coming into a flare again. After the attack, it seems like the colitis symptoms have settled, I'm just pretty tired and not wanting to eat a lot.

Anyway, if anyone has had sudden attacks like this with their colitis, please let me know. I'm going to see my family doctor tomorrow to see about getting this checked out.

Any input is greatly appreciated - thanks again.

Sometimes I have IBS symptoms that feel like that. Usually after eating/drinking something that my body decided it didn't like at that moment. Happens for me out of the blue and sometimes with foods that normally don't bother me. Will just take the energy out of me...

Could also be a really short flare! This DD is so unpredictable... Some flares seem to last for-ev-er and some don't last long.

I think it's wise to see your doc! Let us know what you find out.

Some women with UC notice (UC-like/mini flare) symptoms with their periods.

I find that my family doctor likes to play stupid with my IBD questions.... he usually tells me to call or see my GI.

Yeah, I get like that when I eat something my gut doesn't like. It is very painful and stressful. It usually happens when I go out to eat. It has happened to me a lot of times.

That just happened to me this morning and I ended up having to sleep for two hours afterward. I have severe pain and when I try to go to the bathroom I get this weird sensation throughout my entire body almost like a withdrawal feeling, and the weird shakey feeling stays around even when your not in the bathroom. It happened to me quite a bit before I knew what it was (UC). The DR.'s told me it was inflamation mixed with your colon being irritated then when your stool moves across it, wow that's where the pain and weird symptoms come in! Was your pain sharp or severe cramping or something else?

I went to my doctor today and she does think it was a colitis flare. Doesn't seem symptomatic of kidney stones or anything like that.
FUNMOMMA, your attack sounds very very similar to the one I had. It's hard for me to describe the pain, in that it was so intense I really couldn't handle it - I thought I might pass out - but it wasn't sharp or anything, just an all consuming intense lower abdominal pain. Along with the urge to go the washroom. After I was all shaky, sweaty and pale, and slept it off for a couple of hours. Had the pain persisted for more than those few minutes I would have definitely been on the way to the hospital.
I've only been diagnosed since this past summer, so I wasn't sure that a flare could be different each time it appears. My original flare was nothing like this one.

RacingChick,

I take Hycoscyamine (an anti spasm med for your intestines).... it really helps with the pain and spasms. I don't know how I survived my first flare without it. Now I take them like they are candy. You might want to ask your doctor about antispasm meds.
