Thanks for that info. damo123. I know the medics in Ireland/Uk are very careful to use words like 'cure', even when they use it they attach 'potential' in front of it.
I just want to enjoy the moment that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Yes I think every member of this UC forum is very realistic and very well informed. I don't see any of us getting too excited about
supposed cures. But at the same time I think it is good that we live in hope that one day suffering from this condition (i refuse to call it a disease!) will in fact be a thing of the past.
I propose a toast.....Here's to that nasty word - A CURE!....clink!...clink!
If I hear anymore on press releases about
this drug in Ireland and the UK I'll post links.

Where did the doctors say "cure?" I read through 5 articles and didn't see that. Plus, this hasn't even been tested on humans yet (only mice), so no one knows if it is a cure for humans.

Remember that the drug has not been licensed in the UK....actually the drug (in the form that humans take it) doesnt even exist yet...thats now being worked on in Denver....so its more than likely that the initial patent for this drug will be US-based...

This is good news. It's a new direction for us if anything. Whether or not its a "cure"? Well I think that to be called a cure the studies need to be at least 10 years. Who is to say that it's not just a long remission? Isn't that what a chronic illness is? we get sick then get better...then it comes back. I went 5 years without a flare but would never have said I was cured. Foe me anyway, I need more than 7 years of testing (which i believe is the FDA testing period, or at least it used to be)
I still think this is exciting but I can't let myself get overly excited. The drug approval process is just too long.

Well who's to say really what form of "cure" there will be, maybe it'll be something you take one time and it'll cure you or maybe it'll be where you have to take it everyday but it will still cure you because no symptoms will return at all so long as you take it everyday...with a "treatment" even while taking it symptoms can re-occur...so the way I see it, it's boils down to being a play on words. Honestly if I have to take something everyday to be cured with no relapse what so ever then in my opinion I'd be cured...although it would be much nicer if it was something that only had to be taken once, or only a few times a yr or something along those lines.

Even if it's not a cure, if it's the complete understanding of what UC is and what causes it, that's a huge leap.

Yeah, I agree...either way it's a good thing. I just wanted to know if the researchers actually thought it may be a cure, or if the journalists in a couple articles reported incorrectly.

On the Irish news which broadcast the TV report they spoke to a medical doctor leading the research. I'm quoting from memory here but he said something along the lines...
"this is a breakthrough in the treatment of these diseases. It could lead to a new way of medically dealing with such chronic disease and the research points to a potential cure in the future"....this is a "hazy" version of what he said
Also this form of treatment is hoped to be used to treat cystic fibrosis as well....in fact as i mentioned earlier they didnt report this as a potential treatment for UC...they only mentioed CB and crohns...but i have no doubt it extends to all IBD.
I hope this helps. I havent read the online documenation yet only what I've read in Irish newspapers and a glance at a few links.
I actually lecture in Cork University so I might be able to access some reports from Dublin University that haven't been made public. I'll try this over the weekend.

Hi Everyone,
I don't want to kill any hopes of this being a 'cure' but I decided to ask Prof. Cormac Taylor (he made the discovery) about
if he thought this was a cure for people like us, here is his reply:
Dear Sangha,
The term "cure" was never used in our press release and a journalist somewhere used this innapropriately. We have identified a new therapeutic avenue of opportunity in a model of the disease. A drug that may be used in the future to treat IBD but it is very early in the drug development process at the moment, a process which can take many years. I hope this answers your question.
Cormac TAylor.

From what I've read it dosent look like they have begun clinical trials yet,Does anyone know if they have.
I would sure like to get on a trial for this.
