TheLori-i had had UC for 8 years, and had had four flares, three of which required week long hosptial stays, i had been sick on and off since June, when I got my surgery in April, lots of steroids, and even those weren't working anymore.
I feel great all the time now, colds go away faster (having that immune system back is a plus!) i can eat better, actually do some exercise. Recovery is not all fluffy clouds and puppy dogs, but the pain from that only lasts a few weeks, and the pain from UC or Chrons lasts a lifetime.
Sex was weird the first time, but now it's not, it's actually better, cause I feel better. On the ostomy board there is a thread about that, i won't go into it here, might be young eyes reading!
RDM is right, everyone is different, and surgery is not a cure for Chrons, but many people with chrons are in remission now, and some are even med free. It is also true that everyone's experinces are diff, but the end result is that there is no cure for UC other than surgery and none for Chrons at all, but surgery does help. I guess we are a pro surgery choir, but only because we want people to know that there is life after surgery and it's great! Someone on here made a great comment that he had no idea why he and GI's are working so hard to keep a diseased body part that isn't going to get better, that's not the exact quote, but it's close.
