Cost of generic Colazal?

Well I picked up my first refill with the generic Colazal today.  And even though I don't have to pay full price for my meds ($5 generic and $10 Brand), I still was shocked at the sticker price.  How much was your Colazal and how much is your generic? I'm just curious.....the generic I picked up today was $318.

I picked mine up last week and with my ins it only cost me $15.00. When I asked at my local CVS, what would the cost be for my prescription of 270 pills with no ins, she told me $440.00!!! And that's for the generic version. That is simply way too high in my opinion.

I thought that all CVS's prescription were the same price no matter what state you were in? Because I got mine at CVS too. But yes, I agree that it's way too high. I think my Colazal would've cost me close to $600 though so I guess it sort of a savings for generic if anyone that doesn't have insurance but not by much.

I'm in the same state all the time, the state of confusion!! lol No, I live in the Syracuse,NY area, and my local CVS store told me $440.00 for 270 pills of Generic Colazal. I did call around my area, and found that Walgreens was cheaper than CVS,Target,Walmart,Rite Aid and Eccard. But, Since I can walk to CVS and my out of pocket cost would be the same I just used CVS. If I had to pay full price I would have went to Walgreens.

$440 for 270 capsules sounds like the list price for original Colazal. It can be hard to get the correct info. from chains. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

i don't know what will happen to us in the future, but the price of insurance paying out to the pharmacy and all of the meds this disease requires we will go through out lifetime cap before we are old-i'll spend my last dime on my kids , but between the drs ,number of checkups you're supposed to have including scopes and biopsies-because now she's at higer risk for colorectal cancer, we won't have insurance if one of us get some catastrophic illness like cancer or uc, -unless we can wait until we are eligible for medicare, but that's a long way off, i don't know what happens to people that don't have insurance and can't get these medications it's got to change! i don't know how , but among other things it keeps me up at night thinking.

My pharmacy here in Texas showed the price of Colazal as $440. When I got it this time it is generic, and the price showed as $331. I would assume their cost is approximately 10-15% less. Generally the larger the company, the better deal they can get on the generic drugs.

Picked mine up today. $10 co-pay, insurance covered $165.00. This was at CVS.

Where are you? I went to CVS in SYRACUSE and for 270 pills with no ins they said it would have been $440

Wonder if the answer Sodbuster got ($440 for 270 Colazal capsules w/o insurance) at his chain pharmacy really means that they make customers who lack insurance pay the full list price for original Colazal. (?) That's what it sounds like to me. I live in the same state that he does. There is a parallel with hospital lab test charges in my area: my insurer sends me statements that say "Total charge $700, but provider accepts $200 insurance coverage as payment in full". Without insurance patients are billed at the highest rate! It's a form of punishment to those with low income, but just routine for the well-to-do. / Old Hat

I filled my RX with the generic week for the first time last week. I have insurance but have already gone over my yearly cap (yes, in one month!) The name brand has been costing me $380 out of pocket. The generic was around $140. I use a small, local pharmacy, and my pharmacist said that there are several generics out for Colazal now. Is it possible some of you are getting a more expensive one?

So far, I haven't suffered any setbacks from the switch to generic. Thank God!

JBM13-- multiple generics is another possibility that could be impacting on Rx price. 2 or 3 other members posted about generic Colazal coming on the market a couple months ago, and I do think one of them said that a generic sanctioned by Salix (maker of original Colazal) would soon be available. Then there was another pharmaceutical mentioned-- so that would account for 2 versions of the generic that we've heard about here so far. I was just put back on colazal havent pickd it up yet cuz it was $75 copay ... 3pills 3 xs a day.. so I'm not sure if that is good or bad.. I'm sure if I mail order them they'll be a bit less but for my first prescription I was trying to get it faster.

thats where I"m at right now.. after like 3 yrs flare free i'm back in the saddle.

about a week or two ago Salix Pharmaceuticals sent me a card good for a total of $100 off co-pays, up to six prescriptions of Colazal. I'm guessing they sent those since it just went generic but I have the same co-pay regardless of whether I use generic or not so I'll be using the card and getting free co-pays for probably five months. Might check their website.

Hi AuntJo, welcome to Hw :) Is that the generic Colazal you were prescribed or brand name? I think $75 copay is better then paying full price but if you can't afford the $75 then it can make it tough. Are you able to tolerate sulfa? If so, maybe you can ask for Sulfasalzine which is way cheaper then any of the other meds.

I got mine today in the mail, the generic version, have to get mine through my husband's insurance and it has to be mail order, I got a total of 540 pills for $16.00. Was paying $202.00 for 540 pills of Asacol 400mg through his insurance, it saved me a good deal of money there. I assume everyone is talking about Balsalazide Disodium 750mg.?

At wit's end-- can you tell if it's the generic made by Watson? You definitely got a good price. The price of brandname Colazal has dipped somewhat, from $790/280 capsules in 2003 when it was new to the market to $551 this yr. Some of us on the forum had bad luck taking the generic balsalazide & would be interested to know how you fare with it. I get a 90 day supply of generic. $582.97 for 810 capsules. Same price since last fall. I pay $60 and insurance pays $522.97

My last receipt of generic Colazal (#360) was $87.48. My copay was $20.

Old Hat, I fared fine with it.
