Hmmm, Ok...so I don't have the smell or the discharge - is there something else that can account for the itching? Just curious - it's not like it's all the time but when it happens, usually it's for a couple days then it stops but it drives me nuts. Oh and I did a douche once - uh huh, never again! I had the worse yeast infection of my life! I haven't done that in over 20 years because it scares me now.

Red you should really get your doc to check it out....I personally love commando, at the CD forum we were complaining about wearing bras, pads, tampons, pantyhose, pointy shoes, ect and how annoying it is to be a woman...I can't stand wearing any of the above mentioned, I should have been a guy! LOL

External itching could also be an external fungal infection. Had one of those a year ago after coming off of pred - my whole body went hay-wire!

Take a look down there - if it's really red - not the pink it should be - it could be an external fungal infection. Good thing about those is that a topical cream clears it up really fast! Nystat or something is what I used... Can't remember the actual name...

Hope that goes away soon! So yucky feeling...

Prednisone has given me about 5 yeast infections since July, I only had about 2 in my entire life before that, the combination of the steroid and excessive sweating is not good me lady parts!

Check out Suzanne Somer's book Ageless about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Someone on another forum recommended it to me. I checked it out from my local library yesterday. I've only read the first few chapters, but it has been eye opening so far. As someone who's premenopausal, I believe this is going to be a godsend.

I suffered for over a year with recurrent BV (it was unmistakable with that odor, yuck) finally, finally, finally a nurse practicioner I saw suggested testing me for Urea Plasma which is what it turned out to be! I don't know if it has anything to do with my UC or not, but that is something to suggest being tested for if you battle with BV over and over...

Does anyone know if there is a connection between BV and GERD? It may be coincidence but it seems like every I have an acid reflux episode I come down with BV a couple days later.

Sometimes get some irritation from my "plug" of TP that moves up in the vaginal area. I try to keep A&D on the anal area and if it gets uncomfortable I use Lysine cream - it works really well and is completely natural.

I think I had BV once several years ago. It was some sort of bacterial infection down there and it hurt super bad. I had to take antibiotics for it and that cleared it right up. On another note, I often get really itchy/painful down there for 2-5 days after my period. It had been happening every month up until the last few months when it hasn't happened at all. I asked my gynecologist about it at my last pap smear and she said I could try to use over the counter yeast infection cream on it or I would have to come in to see her when it was happening. I don't think it's a yeast infection though when it happens because there is no weird discharge or odor.

Just one note on using the MetroGel or Metronidazole abx orally. DO NOT drink alcohol on this medication or for 3 days after using it. Metronidazole is what they also give to alcoholics to get them to stop drinking--it's supposed to make you vomit/get diarrhea/general nasty feeling. My pharmacist really emphasized this to me. I missed out on drinking beer during the superbowl--but at least I wasn't vomiting during the game/commercials!

Sarah, do you use sanitary napkins or tampons? If you are using the pads, it can be that the blood from your period is aggravating the hair or skin down there. When I was having periods, I couldn't use tampons so I sort of had that trouble too. But I found if I cleaned frequently with Summers Eve wipes with aloe, that it helped tremendously.

I find this interesting. Before I was diagnised with UC I had some issues with BV. I always wondered if it was related... seems like a lot of us have had BV.

What exactly were your symptoms? Ever since my surgery I have had what first appeared as pinkish discharge from the vagina....it looked like the drainage that was in my JP tube which was removed a week after surgery. I had a bit of thrush on my tongue and thought it could be a yeast infection. The surgeon prescribed Diflucan...only one pill. The discharge stopped but a few weeks later I started getting a white discharge and some burning when I urinated. My surgeon doesn't want me getting a PAP smear just yet, he said it was too soon after surgery. However, I think I should go to my gyn doctor because it sure seems like a yeast infection to me. I may add that I am 64 yrs old and haven't had a period in twenty years. Prior to my total colectomy and perm ileo I never had a gyn problem.

Interesting. I have had BV 2 times in the past. None as of lately though (knock wood). I wouldn't be surprised though if there is some kind of connection w/ UC. It seems to all relate to bacteria imbalances. I totally agree w/ OP...if it's not one hole it is another lol.

It is not necessarily discharge. It is a general "yucky" feeling. You don't feel normal and you feel uncomfortable but it's not pain or discharge. I think different people can have different symptoms. I know it can also be almost asymptomatic. I've been checked yearly for a while and haven't had any BV but I did have it prior to being diagnosed with UC.

I too struggle with vaginal infections, but a daily probiotic has helped. Also, when I just feel uncomfortable or have that "yucky" feeling many here have described, soaking in a sitz bath with either baking soda or Aveeno oatmeal powder added to the water really feels great. The position you sit in when using a sitz bath seems to soak tender areas better than an ordinary bath while lying prone. Just thought I'd suggest this to anyone who's having slight trouble.

Some natural remedies are:

Tea tree oil
Boric Acid

And wearing cotton breathable underwear will help a lot in BV.
