Flaring for the first time again since been diagnosed in 05'

Long story to short, first of all am waiting to hear from the doctor here shortly to tell him how I am doing with the Pred. I have been on since Monday. Is it normal to always have blood in your stool whether it be just gas and cramping, mvmt. whatever when you flare? This is my first one since 2005 and I don't know what to expect each time this will happen the rest of my life. Luckily, this Pred. has pretty much made a difference since last week but of course with the blood, not out of the woods just as yet.

Am thinking he will keep me on 20 mg (2 pills a day) for at least another week I am assuming and then hopefully, start tapering down.

Your thoughts?

I am sure others will agree that you should talk to your doctor about taking rectal meds such as Rowasa or Proctofoam.

hope you get past the flare soon.

when i was flaring, i would have blood with gas, BMs, tiny BMs, anything. so that was normal for me.

my second flare wasn't as severe as the first and an 8 week course on pred (total, including the taper) was enough for me. hopefully you can do a quick one too.

Hi Taben,

I was also started on 40 mg of prednisone for my first major flare in a long time 5 weeks ago. I am currently tapered down to 30 mg. I was on 40 mg for three weeks! Too long, but my colonoscopy (my very first one) looked bad, as my GI said. I expect to be on prednisone for a total of 10 weeks. For me, the prednisone took away my symptoms in about 10 days. Prior to that I also had B in my stools every time (4 x a day). And then one day my bms became normal. I think you should give it more time. The side effects are awful, but, you're right, prednisone works.
