Hello,

Iam new to this forum and i hope somebody will answer my questions.

I was diagonised with UC in June 2006.
From then I started taking Asacol 400mg * 12 per day..It was doing good for some days and docter did a colonoscopy and he said everything is

clean and he asked me to stop the medicines..So i stopped then and immediatly after 1 week it started flaring up.
Later i moved to a new place, new docter and started taking Lialda 4 per day..But everytime i eat some spicy food(not sure yet which kind of food is creating trouble for me ) i see blood in the stool,mucus and little abdominal pain. Then i visited the same docter and he asked me to start using
Canasa Suppository.. i started using them when ever i feel it flares...It will be fine when i use suppository. But one thing i noticed is when i don't use Suppository, in the one first bowel movement i see lot of blood and in the second it will be very less. But when i use suppository it is very less
first time itself..So I'm not sure why this is happening.

Is it like my lialda is not reaching upto rectum or due to heavy inflamation in the colon all the medicine is obsorbing there itself?
Do we need to use suppository daily..? Can i stop using it when there is no blood?
Is it common for all the people or this is happening for me?
I see some people posting Fish Oil helps in reducing the inflammation..where can i find it..what is the name?

Hope some of you guys answer my questions..Please advise...

Oral medications don't reach all the way to the rectum; that's the reason for rectal drugs. Rather than stopping the suppository when you no longer see blood, try tapering it gradually. Maybe every other night for a couple of weeks, then every third. When you start seeing blood, you'll know they're too far apart. If you see blood when you take it every third day, go back to every other day. Many people use suppositories or enemas on the schedule that works for them all the time. It's a maintenance drug for your rectum.

Hi..welcome to the forum.

Where exactly is your UC...limited or throughout?

Your crazy GI should never have had you stop the Asacol cold turkey....that a goof! He should have...however..had you taper one pill a week down to to a maintenance dosage of 8 then down to 6 if you were doing well. But, in saying that, you should have been on rectal meds immediately anyway.

You should really be using the retention enemas to get a bit farther past the rectum and into the sigmoid colon...but since you're using the suppositories, you can use them up to 3 times a day to get the bleeding completely stopped.....then you can consider to taper them.

The bleeding less is good...the more blood is because it's pooling and after the second bm of it being less means the meds are helping you.

I personally don't believe that fish oil's hype benefits UC....I'm more a probiotic supporter...fish oil does/can thin the blood....many of us are on 5ASA meds...so I don't know if the combo of fish oil and 5ASA meds is a good thing. There are many who use them...there are many who use them and still flare. Choose the type wisely..as everything, not all agrees with everyone. Trial and error.

You should, however, be on probiotics.

Hope you go back to your doc and set up a plan of rectal/oral 5ASA meds...the enemas would be a better choice for flaring and save the suppositories for tapering or for maintenance.

Let me get this straight....Your 1st bm of the day is really bloody and subsequent bms have less blood if you don't take the suppository.  If you do take the meds, your bms are less bloody from the start.  And your question is why? 

If this is indeed your question, and I am understand you correctly, keep reading.  if not ignore the rest.

Your first BM will usually be the bloodiest because you have been "saving up" all night long.  Once you expell that, your subsequent BMs will be less bloody.  While on the meds, the reduction in blood is due to the meds working on healing your colon.  If you were to continure on the meds, I suspect your would have less and less blood every day until you have none.  (At least that is what happens with me).  The suppositories (I have never used) don't reach as high up as the enemas, and if your disease is reaching higher up, you should consider taking the enemas or cortifoam.  Hope this helps.

And I never stop using my enemas......ever, scared to. I use them daily. And there is no reason to stop. Mine are 5ASA enemas, so no side effects that I can tell. I also use fish oil supplements.....FISOL is the name and I get it at whole foods, but you can buy it online. Any fish oil supplements will work. I buy the enterically coated ones, the other ones make me birp fish all day.

When I'm flaring I find that my first BM is the best and it is the subsequent BMs that produce more and more blood. Goes to show how much UC symptoms can very from one person to next. Strange disease!

Hello All,

Thanq you very much for all your responses.
Today i really felt happy that some body is there to help and understand the feelings of others.
I'm always in the assumption that I'm the only person who is suffering from this disease.

One more thing did anybody of you guys tried taking natural remedies . While I'm browsing thru the web i see lot of websites which talks about natural remedy by taking some www.AloeElite.com .. Not sure whether these guys are trying to fake or speaks true..

Hi Heather,

The last colonoscopy was done in June 2006.
Docter told me that it is more in the rectum.
In my docters last visit this month he ordered for some blood tests and later called me and said everything is good. Not sure what he got from blood tests.
Do we need to do colonoscopy once in a year?

Hi...with that result...all clear is probably regarding the biopsies and precancer or cancer.

You should have one about every 3 years unless you're experiencing unusual symptoms or cannot get your UC controlled through meds.

What blood tests did youhave?

You should be on rectal meds...really.

I don't use aloe.

You might consider to make a signature complete with when you were diagnosed, where your UC is, what meds you're on and whatever else. Limit it to 10 lines. It's helpful so that we can answer or ask questions effectively without driving you crazy with the same ones over and over.

Hi Heather,

Right now Iam taking 4 pils of Lialda in the morning and one Canasa 1000mg suppository in the night.
Suddenly i see some abdominal pain when ever i eat something. Blood in the stool is less. Is it normal..
Just Iam little bit worried now.. Is it like the intake of medicines are mode and due to this facing this kind of problem..please advice.

Rowasa enemas help me very much as the asacol alone could not keep me in remission. (was dx with Pancolitis moderate in May of 07)
