Has anyone's GI told them they need to see a hemotologist?  My daughters very anemic, her hemoglobin is 7 and it should be 12.  She had a blood transfusin while in the hospital last month, but how her hemoglobin supposed to improve if she is bleeding every time she goes to the bathroom and then gets her period every month.  Her Dr. wants to refer her to a Hemotologist.  She is taking Iron every day.  and has had three remicade transfusions.  any comments?

Sounds like perhaps he thinks her hemoglobin is lower than would be expected from the UC. It's amazing how much blood a small amount can look like in the toilet. The hematologist can check her out, make sure she doesn't have any problems with making new red blood cells and rule out any problems there.

I'd see the hematologist, but I agree about your conclusion. Taking iron etc. is like trying to fill a leaky bucket if she's bleeding. Just keep an eye on her and hope she'll get to remission. I was severely anemic for over a year before reaching remission and stopping bleeding.

I saw a hematologist last year, and had an iv iron infusion.

I had been anemic for more than 15 years.

Since then, no anemia.

I would strongly recommend going.

I was also referred to a hematologist for iron IV infusions. I still go back for check ups annually. For me, it was a very good thing.
