what to give to control acid reflux in UC??

There are some days when my husband has lot of gas and acid reflux. Today is one of those days. Any advice on handling any of these things.

For gas, he can use Phayzme (sp?) or Gas-X and if his acid reflux is bad, he can try Prilosec OTC first to see if it works. But any of the PPI's (proton pump inhibitors - reduces the stomach acid) take a few days to begin working.

I take Zantac every evening to control the reflux I sometimes get overnight.

Zantac worked for me as well. At first I was eating tums and rolaids like candy but then the Drs got angry with me because the tums can cause your stool to look black and the black stool is a sign of blood so it is misleading. I got off the tums and started the Zantac and it was good. Vanilla ice cream always helps the belly too !! :O)

I take Phyzame for gas. The OTC acid reflux meds didn't work for me. I have tried almost all the prescription ones too. Right now I'm on Nexium.

Another question is whether acid reflux/GERD are separate conditions from UC? The literature on the web seems to indicate that while both maybe a result in part of a dodgy digestive system there is nothing to link both conditions in general? Is this true?

sorry to part steal this thread but I figure the questions is relevant

I went to the doctor about a week and a half ago because my stomach hurt so bad I couldn't sleep. It was higher up not like my normal colitis pain. They did an ultrasound and said it wasn't my gallbladder and gave me Prilosec which kind of made me mad. I thought it must me something else - have never had heartburn type problems ever. But after a few days it helped so I guess I have something else to add to the list. I wonder if it can be because of all the pills I have to take. Do you all know if taking pills on an empty stomach could cause this?

Well Asacol is an aspirin based drug. If you are taking 4800mg of this each day on an empty stomach you have the potential to really hurt your stomach lining.

Jessica, yes taking these meds can damage your stomach. That is what happened to me, I was taking Asacol for many years on an empty stomach. Switched to Colazal, repeated the cycle and now I guess I'm going to be on Prilosec or similiar for long term :(

I am going to alway take it with food from now on....my husband raised the head of our bed up also as I read that can help and I am getting used to it but it kindof feels like we are sliding off at night. Is Colazal asprin based also? I am going to ask my doctor to switch me to that next visit anyway....I wanted to try switching my maintance before I try anything more hard core.....

I get a little gerd now and then, it was pretty bad when I was on asacol. Zantac 75 has always made me feel better. I am on colazal now, and have fewer episodes of gerd.

i used to take protonix for all that stuff, and it really helped, but it is really expensive

I have taken Prevacid for a while then my dr. switched me over to Pariet. They both work very well for me, especially the Prevacid which took only like 20 min. to work versus 3 hrs for the Pariet.  Good luck finding what you need.

We had a lady come in almost three months ago actually taking that stuff everyday, adjusted her twice and she hasn't had the problem since. Nerves that innervate the gut come right out from in between the shoulder blades in upper back. We get alot of that actually.

I use to have to take it a long time ago. I had the mucous junk that would come up in my throat and mouth and have to sit up in a chair to sleep sometimes, constantly spitting it out. It stopped once I got in my profession, lol.

I also tell people to use 8 oz warm water, 1 tbspn Pure Raw Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar (Braggs or Spectrum whatever they have) and 1 tbspn honey in a bad episode, or to eat a cup of yogurt. Will slay the heartburn just about everytime. He should drink some in the evenings before he eats. If I am gonna eat bad and splurge on pizza, I always do ACV first. I wish someone would have told me this 10 years ago.
