with my colitis...no flare ups yet. You must make sure its a high enough doseage, nothing less then 10 billion active cells ...

I take 15 billion of bifoViden, three times a day  and 15 billion of lactoViden three times a day...by Metagenics.

It was referred to me by a colon cancer survivor who own his own health food store...i gave it a try and what a difference.

I have been doing alot of research and for anyone who is interested you might want to take a look at this,

VSL #3 probiotics is another option, it actually heals the damage the colitis has done...

For myself and i have had this for 10 years, once i tried probiotics at the high enough doseage what a difference...sure hope this helps anyone who is suffering for i know what it feels like.

I forgot to add ...if you are experiencing a flare-up, take the probiotics that i mentioned above along with another product called "Glutagenics"..it really helps stop the soreness and diahrea of flare ups.

Its a powder that you mix with water or juice ...and the second day after i started to take it, my pain was nearly gone, such a relief...its only meant to be taken for a period of 4 to 6 weeks. It works, least wise it did for me..and its all natural. A bit pricey though, but it was worth it , around $50.00 a bottle.

I have since stopped taking it, I only needed the one bottle and maintain my intestinal health with the probiotics....watching what i eat and i take my one teaspoon of metamucil with water for fiber every day. Metamucil also helps to form your stools...

The last flare up i had was when i started on that "Glutagenic powder" early Fall and it stopped it...and i havent had one since because i maintain my intestinal health with the probiotics.

Should i get another flare up or start to get another flare up i will buy another bottle of it but so far so good.

Just thought to share with you all what works for me for i suffered big time for years upon years...and its such a horrible affliction.

Hi, welcome to Healingwell. :) Yep, many of us already know the healing properties of pro-biotics and in fact many of us are on them. I, unfortunately, can not rely on probiotics alone which is why I have to take the meds. I'm glad it has worked for you.

Hey for your flare-ups, you might want to try "Glutagenics" it really helped my last flare up hugely..it stopped it.

I know it might not work on everyone but if you give it a try..you might not have to take prescribed meds...i no longer need them.

how do you take l-glutamine?? which form and what's the dosage?? same thing for the oregano oil??

Do you have to order the Glutagenic powder from the web or you can get on the wholefood stores, vitamin shoppe etc

Metagenics makes a host of great products that we can use....I have recently started using bifoViden three times a day along with other refrigerated probiotics. It's still too early for me to tell if it's helping, but it was my nutritionist who recommended it so my hopes are up.

Can anyone offer advice about where to start with probiotics and supplements? I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by everything out there and all the different choices available. I guess I'm curious more how you went about finding the right stuff for you rather than what it is you take.

yes i have the similar situation. my husband also wants to try some probiotics after this weekend but we are not sure which is the good option to try.

I talked to my GI nurse yesterday and she recommended Culturelle (sp?). Has anyone had experiences with this one?

I bought my Glutagenic powder mix from a health food store but its also available online...just google it and it should give you a number of places where you can purchase it...or even phone any local health food stores to see if they carry it.

The  owner of the store i found is very informative (colon cancer survivor)..he told me the probiotics they sell in the drugstores are not high enough in active cell count so they dont work as well and they must be made to make it to your intestines and colon, to get past your stomach acid..

 The two probiotics i take are 15 billion each....three times a day also from Metagenics. BifoViden and LactoViden

I still get the odd twinge, i know i'm not cured but gosh its 98% better then it was before...

Its Spring here now and the weather has changed to warm, ordinarily i would have had a flare up, but i havent had one....my last flare up was in the Fall. ..and my flare ups were with fever, and sore joints and bloody diahrea.

For my last flare up that Glutagenic powder worked by the second day i took it, what a difference, i was so thankful...and then as the days went by my diahrea lessened...with each day i took it. It tastes sorta like wet cardboard but who cares, it worked :)

After the bottle was finished, i didnt buy more, i just kept up with the two probiotics, three times a day..and so far so good. :) I do take metamucil for fiber too..it helps form my stools.

I know what i took may not work for everyone ...i didnt even know it would work for me but i tried it, and i'm sure glad i did.

I did a little searching and this is what I've found on Metagenics:

LactoViden: 15 billion live organisms Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM Strain Lactobacillus salivarius Ls-33 Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37 Lactobacillus plantarum Lp-115 Streptococcus thermophilus St-21

BifoViden: 15 billion live organisms Bifidobacterium lactis BI-07 Bifidobacterium lactis BI-01 Streptococcus thermophilus St-21

I had posted something on Metagenics before and it looks like a good brand, even recommended by a prominent GI at Cedar Sinai.  He recommended the Ultra Flora Plus for Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth.  I gave a call to my health food store and they said that Metagenics is more of the Doctor's brand and Ethical Nutrients is for the stores (not sure about outside the US)--though they should be the exact same thing.  I picked some up the other day--I think the specific product was Intestinal Care--which contains 25 billion (from memory), 50:50 blend of L. acidophilus NCFM and B. lactis Bi-07, which are already covered in LactoViden and BifoViden, just the proportional cell count would be lower.  Makes me wonder if variety or numbers are better--which has always been a question.  I've only been using the Ethical Nutrients' Intestinal Care for a few days now, so it is too early to tell, only I have noticed less gas, which is nice. 

Maybe it will be good to try glutamine again.  During my flare, it didn't seem to help, but maybe now it will.
