Hello All,

Recently i had a synus infection and started taking cold medication. I got relief from that , but suddenly my UC started flaring up..Not sure it is due to synus and medications.

Upto now I'm on Lialda 4/day and canasa supp(1000mg) occasionally when ever i see some discrepancies in my bowel movement.

But after this flare i visited my GI docter and he started me with prednisone of 40mg/3 days and 30mg/3 days and so ..on until it is completed. I'm on 6th day of my flare with 30mg completed today.. from tomorrow I will be on 20mg/3days...
So now I'm taking 4 Lialda/day and 1 canasa during night.
Still today i have 5-6 bowel movements(1-2 in the nights) and little blood in the stool with abdominal pain..

Please tell me if this is normal during a flare or Is it serious to think about..
How prednisone works.. will it work when we are reducing the prednisone dose or in high doses?

Please advise me how can i get out of this flare and what kind of food is preferrable?

Well I would think that you would have to go up in Prednisone if you are still flaring instead of tapering it already. But then it can be a pain trying to get off it later. Have you tried Rowasa enemas or Proctofoam? I had (some) better luck with those rectal meds than Canasa, I am not a fan of Canasa because they caused me more loose stool and problems than without.

HI nice to meet you,

I have just started pred for the first time I have started on 30mg for two weeks tapering by 5mg there after for a total of six weeks. I was also wondering if you should see a sudden improvement. I have been bleeding since Nov 2007, i have had pentasa supp for the last month with no improvement. I think I will contact spec nurse if symtoms don,t improve before I am due taper.

Hi, I have had UC for 6 years, each year I have had a flare which has required steroids. Start on 40mg per day seem to take a couple of weeks to work then taper by 5mg each week and don't really seem to have a problem although things do deteriorate slightly with each taper but kind of rectify by the end of that week. Each time I have tried to taper from 40mg without being well yet flare has got worse. I am sure everyones experience will be different but this is how it works for me. Hope you manage to get well soon and get off this drug I am currenly on 40 mg have been for 1 week and not really any better yet. Had a good day yesterday and thought things were on th up but today back down again. darn this disease!!!!

Hello Everybody,

Till today I'm still flaring and Just concerned that I'm tapering my Prednisone by 10mg every 3 days.
The abdominal pain is still there and bowel movements are more in the night rather than in the morning.
It is due to the medicines that we take in the morning (Prednisone 20mg,Lialda 4 pils and 1000mg canasa) are staying upto night.
In the nights the i'm waking up due to abdominal pain and senstation of urgency, but i see very less blood though..Not sure what is happening? Is it normal?
Just wondering if i need to talk to GI about this. when i met last week he ordered for colonoscopy which is due in May.
Before calling him i need some of your suggesions......any thoughts what might be going on..? Can i hope the flareup can come down..bcas of no and very less blood in the Stool in the nights?

Please please advise

I don't want to offer specific advice. While I too was one pred for a while and have had flare ups, more so I've learned that everyone is different - frequency, pain, reaction to medication. My advice is that if you are worried, for any reason, don't hesitate to call your doctor. They're there to answer your questions and help you - and it's your doctor who will know best, not us.

My advice would be to call your GI. This taper with little results sounds quite quick. "Been there done that", only to have to go on another longer round of pred. I think you should stay on 40mg longer then taper. But call your GI.

happyliving..............your taper does sound quick, I know from my experience with the evil pred, I have tapered 5 mg at a time, and that is after at least 5 days at the higher dose........Talk with your GI about this, maybe he will change your taper. Seems as though he has you tapering before you have seen any results. Good Luck, hope you seen an improvement soon.
