Am starting this poll as all the UCers I know are really skinny.
Wanted to know if this was a common trend that comes along with this disease.
For me, I am way too thin at 55Kg and 183cm tall...

Why don't you do the ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph options (body type) as well....that will help a lot since some body types are naturally prone to be thin as well as prone to certain diseases.
I'm an ectomorph...5'8"...always been thin and have become a bit "thicker" during my middle age. I do covet it, however...
During the years of my first flare until diagnosis (in my early 30's) I went from about 128 down to 109 pounds. I steadly increased to around 135 - 140 over the years. From age 49, my weight increased to 160 and I'm now down to 150ish at age 53.
I can afford to lose a few more pounds and exercise more to produce more tone and strength.
Add body type in your poll.....

I voted "normal body weight" because I feel that I am. However, according to the height/weight charts I'm underweight. I am about 5'5" & weigh 105-110lbs. My doctors tell me I should be between 125-135lbs. I don't feel like I look particularly scrawny, but I think one's perspective does become skewed after a while.

There isn't a place for me in the poll. My case is "I am larger now than I used to be." Or "I currently am overweight but never used to be". :(

I'm with princesscolon. When dx'd i was severely underweight. Now after a total of 6 yrs of pred i am much bigger than i used to be. I've been everything from a 5 to a 20 in the past ten years depending on the amount of pred in my system. Luckily most of it seems to come off quickly once off the pred.
As of next tuesday i will be off the pred for good!!!! yeah me!!!

I'd be interested to see how relative body weight correlates with location of UC and frequency of flares. It seems to me that weight loss (or poor weight gain) might be related to more time in flares with decreased transit time, and/or to more involvement of the upper colon.

I was average before I was diagnosed but when I was diagnosed I was thin because I rarely ate because it just made me sick. Now that I'm in remission and found the delight of the freshman 15 I'm about 5 pounds over what I should be for my height and age

My son seems to get a flare every time there is pressure at work. He was diagnosed at 13 it went away and did not come back till about 23 with a new stressful job. Thereafter 4-5 times when things get stressful. He is a chronic workaholic. The advice to change job is not an option for him.

I'm 5'10" tall, and weigh around 175 lbs. I was always very skinny (when I was 18 I was the same height but 120 lbs) but through consistent weight training and proper nutrition I have been able to get to a strong, healthy weight. My waist is 31.5 inches and my bodyfat is around 11% which is pretty good, but not as lean as I have been in the past. I've been as heavy as 190 when training hard and cutting out the cardio, but I never feel as good at that weight. I've also been down to 160 lbs and extremely lean, but I felt a bit "stringy" at that weight too. So 175 seems to be my optimum weight to be strong, fast, healthy, and feel good. :)

I've always been underweight. I'm 5 ft and 84 lbs. Last summer before/when I was diagnosed, I lost 12 lbs. But after starting medication, I regained the weight in 6 months!
It was very exciting. (But I still look scrawny.)

used to be thin/regular, (5'8'' 130 lbs) and am now i am what i would classify as underweight (5'8'' and 113 lbs), but everyone i see who i havent seen since dx says to me "oh wow, you look great! you are so thin!" To which i have begun to answer, "really? cuz i thought i looked great before, im this thin now because i have a bowel disease" Becoming uber thin has made me realize that one of the reasons eating disorders are probably so prevalent is because people who have them are constantly being reinforced and rewarded by everyone saying how amazing they look when severly underweight.

I was fairly thin until I reached 50 but then was ony 140 lbs. I gained over 40 #s on prednisone and my weight is still up there. With al my other problems I need to loose at least 20 #. Any suggestions, I'm finally in a true remission.

To Clarify
========
The idea of this poll is to check your "natural weight" - not your medicated weight.
If you were not on prednisone (which defiantly modifies body weight), what is your average natural weight?

I have always been overweight... since I was a baby! Even with UC, I remain overweight. I lose weight when I diet... and I actually lost weight during my pregnancy... but I still remain overweight. I rarely lose more than a couple of pounds during a flare.
I asked my GI about this once. He said that not all IBDers are skinny and that many with mild cases do not struggle with weight loss because they get all the nutrients they need. I remember saying to him... if I have to have this lousy disease, can't I at least be thin? ;)

severin- i don't think that "natural" body weight makes sense to some of us. Our bodies change naturally anyway. I was 19 when dx'd so i wasn't fully developed when pred came into the picture. I'm now 30. UC or not my body would have gone through a lot of changes. The meds just make it worse.
I have had UC for over ten years and in that time have been every weight possible. As a kid i was always underweight. Teachers called my parents thinking i was anorexic. i was about 5'8" and 100 lbs. but my family was always overweight. Everyone of them on both sides. So genetically I'm predisposed to being overweight.
I think it depends on the age you were dx'd and the meds you have been on. I don't believe i have an "average natural weight" becuase my body has never been allowed to naturally do anything due to pred. Women reach their "natural" body weight in there twenties. Most of mine was spen on steroids.
Hopefully some day i will be able to answer this question but becuase of this DD and all the meds I don't think i will ever know my "natural" body type. I just have to deal with what I have.

I was diagnosed at 22, I'm now 38. Before I had kids, I was 100lbs soaking wet and I'm 5'6". After I had kids, I still remained thin but had a little extra "junk in my trunk" :) I am small boned so being thin doesn't make me look sickly unless I get down to the low 100's. I am at 130lbs now and I feel good at this weight and even though I can gain a few more pounds, at least I am looking more "healthy" then I have in a long time.
So in summary, yes I am naturally thin.

I was thin ONLY the first year I was diagnosed (I lost 30 lbs in two weeks). But after that first year, I was always as average as it gets. After menopause I started gaining and I am about 25 lbs over what I want to be.

I was around 130 before I got sick, then I got down to 115 in a week, was hospitalized, got out, went on prednisone, jumped up to 145 and am still struggling to take the weight off. I've been off the prednisone since September, but can't seem to get back to my "normal" size.

I was lucky that I didn't get moonface or gain weight no prednisone. But I can sympathize with all of those that gained a lot of weight, even though they did nothing to cause it. That would suck. :(

I have always been over weight. I was at my heaviest when my UC came to a head.
I have since dropped from a women's size 20 to a women's size 14/16 since September.

I've been naturally thin. After my stint on pred in 2006, I developed a "thicker waste" that I haven't been able to shed. So, now after losing some weight with this flare, I'm back to what I was then - but my body shape is still thicker in the waste than I have been in the past - but it seems to work okay and I'm pretty okay with it. It seems every time I get ready to start toning up, I flare again...
So, I don't know what to answer. I've been thicker for two years now, but am not overweight according to charts...

I've always been within weight range, being a large-boned 5'5' and on the higher end-to-overweight for my category.
Sick for a year before dx, lost 25 lbs. in 3 months before dx.
Now its been 15 months since dx, GLADLY gained the all the weight back. I say GLADLY because I'm healthy!! So what if there's a self-sabotaging war being waged in my colon, right now, its in remission and i'm healthy and feeling good. While i am not happy about gaining back those fabulous 25 pounds i lost and felt great without them, having gained it back is an AMAZING sign. Things are working 'down there' and i'm thankful!
now - on to losing those lbs. that i felt great without!
