I don't experience pain either. During a flare I will have an achy colon, from continuous runs to the bathroom which is usually in the morning. Then when I'm done with my numerous trips to the bathroom the aching usually subsides about an hour later. I do get cramps before running to the bathroom and during "the download" but that's about it.

when I had proctosigmoiditis (only the first 30cm) of my colon, no pain from UC. When I got pancolitis I got the white knuckle wanna hurl pain (when flaring).

I have pain in my right lower back that is a very specific pain when I am starting to flair

I only had real pain when in a flare - this being before i was diagnosed. Went a looong time, 13 months,  with UC sypmtoms before seeking treament. so it was pretty intense...

lower left ab pain, blood, anemia, no energy. crippling cramps before and during and as Quincy so eloquently put it -

now, when in remission, i'm so thankful that the only pain i have is if i've 'held it in' for too long. and then its only minor.

I'm in the intense pain camp on this one. However, in my first flare years ago, during which I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Proctitis, there was none. Now, I get the intense painful cramping during the time on the toilet. We are talking the worst pain imaginable. Off the toilet, some days there's no pain, others there is a dull achy kind of deep pain in the abdomen, especially left side. I've had kidney stones lodged in my ureter before, and I never imagined there could be something more painful. Those pains on the toilet have far surpassed the kidney stone pain at times. At least it only lasts for the duration of the cramps or spasms, though.

I get pain right before I have to go to the bathroom and during my bathroom visit. I am fine all day but when i go to the bathroom i just want to cry because it hurts so bad.

Oh my goodness - I wish I was as lucky as most of you to not have pain with your flares! I have always had pain from day 1. I still have occasional pain while in remission but I think they're phantom pains lol. My flares have their own personalities too as well as the pain level. My rectal area gets the brunt of it all and it can hurt so bad that I want to pass out as I'm going. Plus I get an intense sharp pain on my upper left side while flaring. It's only when the pain goes that I know that I'm in remission because for me, I've always been in pain so that is a good indicator for me. Well that and the marked improvement in bm's.

Red, I have passed out on the toilet before! I get those pains, too when in flare. My first warning of my colon trying to flare is a hard, dull pain right across the bottom of my abdomen. So far upping my Colazal and probiotics has stopped these episodes, which have been associated with the dreaded antibiotics.

I just realized this morning, after being in remission for 25 months (!) I'm beginning to forget some of the detaild of my long flare and the treatments that were tried. What a great feeling!

Totally agree Judy! I remember the pain and the suffering but not like it was yesterday. It's like when you have kids, you know that it was excruciatingly painful but you can't quite remember the pain. I think I'm still in remission but I just don't know on some days. I am still having the occasional "off" day but not like before. Unfortunately, my body didn't like my Colazal taper so I'm back on the 9 a day :( I seem to be doing better now thankfully.

I always have had moderately painful cramps......bearable. But not constantly. Sometimes I just cramp. I used to use Immodium to help with the cramping.
Last year I had the worse pain ever in my 46 years with this disease. I had no diarrhea. But I had an inflamed rectum and for about six weeks, I had pain like I was passing razors whenever I had a bowel movement. I had to take warm baths after all bowel movements to ease the pain. Metamucil and collace have been a part of my daily routine since then and I hope I never experience that again.

No pain for me either. This flare has lasted a lot longer than my first with more D and blood. With my first flare I didn't even have D, just blood on the formed pooh. I too felt fine and could not believe I was "sick". Sometimes I have what I call "contractions" where I will have intense pain that lasts about 10-15 sec. and I might have 4-5 within a few minutes and then never feel it again for months. I have had a lot of gas with this flare. May be the Entocort. That is a listed side effect. My urgency is usually gas with a little blood. My max BMs for this flare was 6 a day.

I have no insurance and am feeling very frightened right now.  I was diagnosed with IBS a few years ago, but never had much pain just the irregular bowel movements.  I now am having so much pain in my lower abdomen and back when I have - what I call episodes - meaning a lot of diarrhea and even many with blood.  The pain is agonizing and I typed in the symptoms and was brought to this site and I, too have actually passed out on the toilet and been "woken up" by my husband.  I am in severe pain today probably the worst ever.  I have been shaking and so dizzy from the pain.  Can someone tell me if these are all symptoms that you are experiencing and what exactly is UC?  I am truly scared at this point with no way to seek medical care!  Any information is greatly appreciated!

Oh laramel, my heart is with you and I will pray for you as well. I am new to this disease - diagnosised 8/25/08 so still in the learning stages. It sounds like uc to me, but the others that have had it longer than I I know are by far more knowledgable. I experience pain in my lower back, lower abdomen, neauseated, my arthritis acts up ( I am 51 ) my bottom feels like its falling out sometimes it's hard for me to just sit down, and there are times I feel I am going to pass out (I haven't actually passed out yet, but have felt that it was about to happen). I don't know if this helps you are not, but I just wanted to respond to your post.

I have no pain, no more than 4 BM's a day wen flaring and blood work showing 100% normal - I have only bleeding.... but I have Colitis, possible Chrohn's apparently.

Ok so how long do flare ups normally last becuase this is the worst pain I have ever had!!! I was diagnosed with IBS over 3 years ago, but never had pain until recently and the last few days I have literally been in bed and on the toilet and in so much pain!!!! I have 5 children I can't stay in bed like this much longer. But not having insurance is keeping me from going to the doctor. Any advice on home remedies?????

Everyone is different but I don't think your pain as you describe it will just resolve itself or will be resolved by any home remedy. You might have a more serious condition now than IBS.

Find a health clinic (Health Department or faith-based safety net clinic) that will allow you to pay what you can, and will connect you with a specialist if necessary who will also allow you to pay what you can. Otherwise you might end up in the emergency room and you don't want that, for lots and lots of reasons.

(I am assuming you are in the USA)

That's me, exactly, when I'm flaring.

Wow, this forum is surreal to me. I never met or "talked to" anyone with UC in more than 20 years.

well in bed only a few days means your lucky. i wish!
i was in bed literally for 3 months straight from the pain. my flare lasted year and 4 months.
i couldnt do anything but lay in bed and go to the toilet.
hubby had to bring me food. if i got my own food i only had a 5 minute window before i would have to lay down again.
and when i was on the toilet.. OMG.. so intense and severe i have to have plastic grocery bags in there with me cuz the pain would make me vomit everytime. i lost so much weight with everything coming out of both ends. horrible experience.
i wish toilets had handle bars. really.
something to grip onto while grunting in agony.
