Tapering off Pred, and on Asacol - I have questions

Diagnoed with UC (pancolitis) in early April. Admitted to hospital for 3 days, started on Prednisone. Now down to 25 mg / Day, in addition to 2.4 grams of Asacol a day. Will be done with Prednisone the first week in June. I have been doing great. Can I continue to be hopeful that when I am off the prednisone, Asacol will continue to do the job ?????

For the majority of people that's how it works. Don't let yourself be discouraged by some of the things you read here. People who have more difficult colons to control are far more likely to be on this board than others. People who respond well to the most usual treatment aren't here because they're out living their lives. Hopefully you will be one of them!

My only advise is CONTINUE to take your meds no matter how good you start to feel. It's easy, especially when you are first diagnosed, to miss doses once your symptoms subside. Good luck once your off the prednisone!

Yes, I agree. If you seem to be responding well, then it should be fine once you are off the prednisone. With my initial diagnosis, I wasn't even put on oral prednisone, just occasional steroid enemas and sulfasalazine (asacol - mesalamine wasn't around then). I had very good maintenance with just those drugs and ultimately a 15 year remission with no meds.

Forgot to add: Congratulations too for getting tapered off Prednisone. It's my goal to stay off prednisone forever. I had such trouble with side effects when I took it for almost 6 months last year.

That is how it has always worked for me. I use a short course of Prednisone during a flare, and the Asacol maintains the remission after that. Stress is the major trigger for my UC, so the Asacol works after the Pred up until the next big stressful event in my life.
