Hello, I am trying to research about UC for my boyfriend. I was looking up alternative medicine and I stumbled on a Chinese Herb called Jianpiling. Has anyone ever heard of this before? The site with the most info was http://www.itmonline.org/arts/jianpiling.htm.
My bf has been on Asacol since we met over a year ago, and I know he's had UC for many years. The Asacol really doesn't seem to help him. His symptoms are almost always present, they just seem to get worse some days more than others.
Any ideas for him to try?
Yes, I have tried Jianpiling twice.
The first was an extract form from an online source. This form did not seems to work for me. However, I later had a Chinese Dr. in China have the Jianpiling forumla compounded for me. It cost a few hundred dollars for a 3 month supply and seemd to improve my symptons.
Some other thinds to try:
Saccharomyces boulardii (Florastor is one name brand). 17 of 24 patients obtained remission is a small pilot study:

DHEA (an over-the-counter hormone), 8 out of 13 patients had responed to treatment:

Also look at Rifaximin for obtaining remission. There are very liminted studies on this with UC. It has gotton me out of a flare twice.
For maintenance of remission, look into Mutaflor, VSL#3 and Psyllium seed powder. Studies have been done on each of these that can be found on pubmed.
Also LDN (low dose naltrextone) has shown some great results in Crohn's disease study. Some UC'ers including myself have responed to this therapy while other not at all. I have relapsed while on in the past but think it does help.
Take Care,
