Is Aloe (A.M.P.) a crock?

I added this question to another thread, but I'm sure its getting lost in there.  Has anyone tried this aloe (A.M.P.) that's advertised on the internet?  It sounds like a miracle remedy, which makes me think its a load of bologna.  I'm fairly new to ulcerative colitis (proctitis), so I don't know what alternative stuff works and what doens't. 

Any experiences you've had would be helpful...

I gotta tell you - one of my friend's dad has IDB and he has been in remission for 10+ years. She asked him the other day how he managed to get into remission and he said he drank aloe every day in the morning and he went into remission and has been symptom-free since. I am sure it will work for some and not for others but I am about to try it. I don't feel like it can hurt.

I list below what all alternative meds I tried. Aloe and fish oil were the two that worked the best for me. Aloe worked at night for me and slowed my BMs. Although it didn't help to get me into remission it did make an obvious impact to lessen my symptoms.

Finding the right aloe is the trick, and its now been some years since I've used it but I think its worth trying once you find the brands and such that come best recommened.

Interesting replies.  The stuff online is in pill form and is unbelievably expensive.  I think the liquid kind is significantly cheaper and more readily available, so maybe its something to try in addition to my meds.

Yes, I would try the liquid. I tried the pills and didn't have any reaction and it was super pricey. I would also suggest you consider fish oil pills. Things like Aloe, Fish oil, flax seed, help lessen internal inflamation. If you can get that inflammation down you can hopefully break the cycle that causes UC and get some remission.

I will definitely try the liquid when I'm a bit more stable. I've heard that it can CAUSE diarrhea, so I need to get to a better place before I try it. I used to do fish oil, and I probably shouldn't have stopped. The problem with proctitis is that by the time your food gets all the way down there (to the bottom of the colon/rectum), its not even food anymore and its properties may not have any effect. SO frustrating!

I read Listen to Your Gut, by Jini Patel Thompson, a lady who has managed her IBD without drugs.

She talks about aloe vera.  She recommends George's Roadrunner Aloe Vera because it's supposed to have the thing that can cause diarrhea removed from it.

It didn't cause me to have diarrhea; however, that's never been a problem for me anyway.  The best thing is, it's really cheap!  I bought a large bottle for around $6. Bad news, it didn't seem to help me.  But, everyone's different.

I found it at the local health food store.  Here's their website that's on the bottle.  I haven't been to the site, but I assume it tells you more about the product and perhaps you can order it there.

I share your frustration with proctitis.  I was first diagnosed with proctitis and started taking Canasa suppositories.  I also tried natural alternatives and it was always hard to know if they were doing what they were supposed to do since the inflammation was only like 7 cm up for me.  I always wondered since it was so low in my colon if I was wasting my money buying oral stuff.

Beth - I actually read that you can make an aloe vera enema, which I would imagine is for people who have symptoms that are quite far down (like ours).  I don't know if I'm ready for that step yet.  I already have to do three medicine enemas a day, so my tush isn't interesting in any more action. nono

Aloe has always worked on small blips for me. As soon as I saw an increase n bm's or had a bit of pain I would do a couple of shots of aloe (can be aloe juice or gel mixed with tea found at GNC)

It never helped me for big problems though.

Also I once did a trial for a drug made from aloe. It was amazing. I was 80% healed in two weeks. My Gi was amazed that it worked better for me than pred ever has. I'm not sure what ever happened to it. The trial was about 7 or 8 years ago. Hopefully someday it will be available.
