After 2 weeks since surgery and numerous ups and downs. Pork and Mash potatoes were for lunch and she wolfed it down.They drained 2 liters out of j pouch and surrounding areas on saturday night and since  everything is on the move.Can anyone tell me what we should be looking for upon return home.Surgeon is very sharp and i am sure they will give us  a list,but just trying to keep on top of things.Tough Kid never complained after all they need to do to get things going.This is a tough surgery she didnot once second guess herself and SHE starting to look healthy again> She 23 and for 2 years had severe colitis will no help from anything for steroids, asacol,colazal,lialda,6mp,methotrexate and finnaly Humira.

Remind me again, did she just have step 1 of a 2 step surgery or did she have step 2?

She had the 2 step, My wife is with her at the hopital and She called to say she is coming Home tommorow.She said she has to visit surgeon in 2 weeks then have a test done on the pouch in 6 weeks then 6 weeks to the reversal.Any signs we should be looking for.I always hope u read post you seem to have great handle on all of this thanks again

What you are bound to notice is how quickly she regains good health.  It seems that once the diseased colon and rectum are gone we bounce back fairly quickly.  She may continue to be fatigued, that's normal.  She also may find that she has bowel movements from her unconnected pouch which is normal too (surgeons usually don't tell patients this) and she might continue to have some bleeding which is normal.

thanks again for taking the time to reply,just got word she is coming home .Hopefully we will be given instructions, heard about the bowels actually working is normal.Had some problems with leaking wafer, she seems to like the form fitting instead of the one u cut to fit stoma, seems to be working ok.We just got to make  sure our puppy Lab who is 120 lbs doesnot knock Her over they weigh about the same.Its a Happy day after alot of ups and downs and I am sure there will be some difficulties to go,but I like the long term feeling it will eventually end, she is even willing to live with the pouch if it comes to it after a rough 2 years.

Milkman,

As long as you remember that it is indeed a long recovery (about a year) you, your wife, and your daughter will be fine.  Once her jpouch is actually connected there might be some moments where you all question whether or not you made the right decision.  Just remember it takes a while for the jpouch to learn to behave like a colon.  There will be good days and bad days but  measure improvement in periods of weeks, not days.
