I can handle QUALITY ground beef, eggs, dark meat chicken like wings and legs (were it's the most tender and takes no effort to chew, unlike breast meat) chewy bacon, roast, baked fish NOT fried(fried foods=NO NO)

I would have to say the chicken is the biggest pick me up.

We colon blowers tend to get dehydrated quick. And just like anyone that has diaria it is important to stay hydrated for a reason. When you loose ALOT of fluids your body will go into a "snowball affect" and just keep loosing the fluids. Your body can not cope with the fluid lost. It's something to do with the patassium levels in the body when they are really low. This would be the snowball affect.

If you can handle it and your sugars are good, Powerade, Gatorade is a REALLY good pick me up for me.

Hi tardofit! Didn't see your post until I posted my last reply. What you said about meats is so interesting, because I've always read that lighter meats like chicken breasts and turkey are better for UC, but they take SO much more effort to chew down than dark meat (even though they have less fat). Ground beef doesn't has never really bothered me, which I always found odd. And you're absolutely right about fried food. That's my number one trigger food.

Thanks for the reminder to keep my fluids up. Its hard to always be drinking all day, but I know I need to.

PS. Love the term "colon blower." That's classic.

I was wondering about doing a liver cleanse because of all these toxic drugs but don't know when would be a safe time. HAs anyone else done any liver cleanses and do you think it would affect the flare?

A healthy liver cleanses itself, Concerned Wife. Cleaning is the liver's job, and it does it well. If toxins build up in the liver, you get sick. That only happens when the liver isn't doing its job. There's a whole industry built around "detoxifying" body parts, when all that's really needed is a healthy liver.

I do liver cleanses once in a while and am always shocked at the results. I don't use commercial products. Use natural, grapefruit juice, olive oil and food grade epsom salts. I agree there are alot of "cleansing" products on the market. I have never used those. I am concerned he is still having some jaundice from his first hospital episode. They can't get him even close to healthy. Still very anemic and low potassium etc.

You get 100's of little bile colored balls in the toilet that are toxins and possible stones. I mean hundreds. I was a non believer till I tried it the first time. My mom is a health food naturopath fanatic and does a lot of these things and she convinced me once to do it with her. The recipe and directions are in the book. "cure for all diseases" Some of the stuff in there seems ridiculous but I know that one works.

sorry, couldn't help myself.... I do believe that homeopathic stuff does work- not for serious problems, but as a general preventative. I do not get the compulsion Americans seem to have to "cleanse" themselves internally. It's got to be some weird repressed thing... & is it just Americans? do you guys think the phenomenon is everywhere??? I don't put all my faith in Western medicine, but ask any doctor about cleansing the body & they basically laugh in your face. We are self-cleaning...why don't people accept that? Fasting is a different story- I do think a 3 day fast every now & then is beneficial- just water, no juice, or weird concoctions.

Eva Lou - I won't argue one way or the other on this, because I don't know much about it (cleanses), but you have to check out this website for Colonix.  BE WARNED - the pictures are absolutely disgusting, but its STUNNING to see what's built up in colons of some poeple.  I can certainly understand why these people were constipated.

Again, if you have a squeamish stomach, you might not want to see this.  I just couldn't believe it:

You don't need to eat meat to get sufficient protein. I've been a vegetarian for the past 4 years and I'm doing just fine nutritionally.

I don't think cleanses or fasts are good for the body personally, but some people swear by them.

Thanks, Sara! When I was eating meat it wasn't very much. I was a vegetarian for a couple years when I was in my teens, and I've never been a big meat-eater since then. If I had a better reaction to peanut butter and beans, I'd probably cut out meat entirely (and permanently); but those two foods seem to aggravate my symptoms. :-(
