 I was just recently diagnosed with UC. Just a few months after I gave birth to my son.I was Pushing incorrectly according to the nurses. I am on Lialda and canasa and Iron sups and multi's. Having flare up now. My mom was a clean freak and so am I. A recent ex-smoker and evidently should have remained a smoker (it keeps UC at bay!!!!). Can't control flare up, any suggestions??

Hi..welcome to the forum,

I would say in part hormone fluctuations will have a role in your flare.

I would suggest you request retention enemas from the GI...Rowasa if you're in the US.

Your clean house wouldn't have anything to do with getting it.
Smoking can keep symptoms down, so it's possible that you're seeing them now that you're not smoking any longer. I wouldn't suggest you start, however.

What symptoms are you having at this time?

Where in the colon is your UC? Throughout or limited?

That's pretty ridiculous if the nurses told you "pushing incorrectly" caused UC. There is no known cause for UC and you certainly isn't your fault that you got it. You didn't get it from anything you did.

Yes, smoking can keep symptoms at bay, but I am a smoker and I still got UC...so it doesn't do it for all of us, unfortunately. It is good you quit.

I second quincy's suggestion for Rowasa enemas. They aren't as bad as they sound.

The nurses saying that pushing incorrectly caused UC?????? OMG< that is the most ridiculous,  ignorant thing I've heard...those nurses must not know much about IBD to say such a statement...anyways,  just know that anything you did most likely didn't cause it...as a matter of fact,  its not totally understood exactly what causes it.    So, are you on any kind of treatment right now?   What are your symptoms?  how were you diagnosed?    There are several treatment options...usually for acute flares,  prednisone will start the healing some.  But you most likely will need a maintenance drug to keep it under control...Have you seen a GI doctor yet?  Colonoscopy?

eyes  OMG, as if pushing "incorrectly" could bring on IBD, I'd like to know how the heck there could even be a difference in pushing?  Pushing is pushing, you can't do that wrong, it's the bodies natural way to have a baby or a bowel movement...that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard and if any medical "professional" ever said such a thing to me I'd slap them clear across the room just for being stupid.

And some bowel movements can feel like (what I perceive) would be like delivering a baby...

I wonder if that's what picnic06 meant regarding the nurses. They might have meant that it caused some rectal bleeding?

Thanks for the welcome words. As it happened I was diagnosed 6mos after birth of son with ulcerative proctitis. A year and

half after that i was hospitalized , thats when I was diagnosed with UC. I too think it was silly saying that i pushed wrong but it was strange that there was no family history of UC and then right after birth was diagnosed with it. I use both rowasa enemas and Canasa Suppositories alternatively two per day. Lialda 4 daily. Iron sups 2 x , a multi. During hospital stay was on prednisone 30mg and then tappered off, also was on asacol 6tabs.

II know certain foods cause flares and I guess maybe stress too. I wonder if wine does? I guess I just wonder if anybody else had been diagnosed shortly after child birth?  My GI doc is a new one for me recommened by my old GI doc who moved away sad . What are some of the other meds that you all take, that seem to help? I would rather stay off the prednisone/steroids, if possible, to controll flare.

food won't cause your flares but eating in itself will quicken the peristalsis...especially an inflamed gut in response to anything in it.
Stress can play a part (I can't even imagine the stress of having a new baby), but mostly I'd say that the hormonal fluctuations is a big part. Are you breast feeding or/and do you have your periods?

Is your UC throughout or limited?

Sorry just want to make it clear, my baby is two now, so tablefood for him, thank god. Hopefully horomones all back in tact. UC all through out (with most of inflamation - on left side). I was told that Sept 07' after hospitalization. My doc did say dairy can trigger it and fried foods, I'm not a big fried food fan but I LOVE dairy. Anyway what are the probiotics everyone is mentioning?

I had a disagreement with my anasthesiologist about what meds I was on right before my last c-scope. He was like, "I see you are on high blood pressure meds for your blood pressure". I was like no, my blood pressure has always been 120 over 70 and I am on it for my kidneys and he was disagreeing w/me, I was like ya know what talk to my Doc I know what I am on it for. I wasn't going to continue arguing w/him and he was not going to admit he did not know everything, MOFO!

Also I had to explain to a nurse that you get poison ivy from the urishiol oil from the plant, you do not get it from touching poison ivy blisters.
