The book that I'm going by refers to fructose, lactose, sorbitol, and mannitol. That includes fruits, milk, and even foods that claim to be "sugar free" that contain sorbitol or mannitol. Once you start looking at labels, you will be amazed how many foods have sugar that you wouldn't think do. That's why I think its a major contributor to obesity. Obviously overeating and lack of exercise are also issues, but people who try to diet and fail are likely eating large amounts of sugar and don't even know it.
