I need a boost

So I've been in remisison since Feb 06. I've been watching the 2008 Olympics. I've been thinking about trying out for 2012. But I'm worried about my UC. I worried about how long I'm going to stay in remisison. How long the Meds are going ot last. I always try to stay positive since that former NFL player who had UC. And the current NFL player David Gerrad(sp)? who has chrons. I really would like to compete w/o the fear of my condition, could I really do that?

Google Steve Redgrave.British Olympic Rower,several times gold medal winner.Ulcerative Colitis sufferer and Diabetic as well!

Hey Toughkicker! You go for it....you won't know until you try! I know we'll be here to support you 100%. I couldn't even imagine being that good at a sport to be considered "Olympic" material, so that's a huge incredible hurdle you've already crossed...I say "Go for it!"

I'm certainly not Olympic material, but I run or work out every day and I've never let uc stop me.

There are people with all sorts of diseases that do all sorts of amazing things. So I have no doubt that if you want to do it, that you can!

Just make sure that you listen to your body and if you need a day off every so often that you take that day off.

It's always a coin toss - you could never flare again, or you could flare tomorrow. Try not to let the UC rule your life - easier said than done, I know.

I would go for it for certain.You must have the ability to attempt it, so don't let your UC stand in your way.Just be careful and listen to your body. i really hope you can do it!!

Hey Toughkicker,
As I sit here watching the Olympics myself and read all these threads, I'm writing to encourage you to follow your dream. Don't let this disease conquer you or your desires or life. I decided last year to train for a half marathon and took last summer to prepare for the Philadelphia Distance Run which I ran last fall. I managed to raise 2600 dollars for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society in the process! I ran in memory of my dad and never felt prouder. All this I did while still flaring, and medicated on Lialda and MP6. Everything I did was planned around my UC. I tried to only run in the evening because mornings were difficult to ensure I would be finished "going". It was definately more planning to achieve my goal, but I did it and would do it again. Be sure to keep in check with your Dr.'s and be honest with yourself if your having a flare that is impairing your ability to work toward your best life. Good luck with your pursuit!
