Still bleeding GI is considering antibiotics

I have been flaring for about a month and a half. The past few weeks have been tough and I am getting anemic. The GI is considering antibiotics? Can they cause more of a flare?

Thats what I was thinking. Usually antibiotics can cause a flare, but I know that sometimes GI doctors will prescribe the antibiotic Flagyl, but not sure why.

I think it's a toss up - sometimes they help, and sometimes they hurt. I was put on flagyl near the start of my last flare, and I think it made things a lot worse. It could have been coincidence, though. If you've been flaring for over a month now without progress, it may be worth a shot.

I was put on Cipro during my flare from hell and not sure what kick started my remission but could have been the Cipro, it did not hurt me.

I was on anti biotics during my first flare and initial diagnosis. I assumed it was part of the treatment for UC during a flare? I am also assuming it didn't do me any harm....I couldn't have been any sicker anyway LOL!!

My doctor has put me on a flagyl/cipro combination in the past and I think it helped push me into remission.

Thanks guys I think he was leaning that way because I have low red blood cell and a fever. I was concerned maybe it would cause more flaring. But to tell you the truth I could not lose anymore blood than I am already losing. So maybe it is worth a shot. I need to by iron pills too I am so pale.

It depends on which antibiotic.

You may want to consider looking into supplements to heal the colon: Mucosaheal, l-glutamine, George's Aloe Vera are some I've found helpful. Omega-3 supplementation will help reduce inflammation.

I just heard from my GI he is sending out a prescription for Flagile. He advised If I don't feel better buy monday or the fever is not gone to call him back. I will keep everyone in the loop.

Have you had a stool test? Flagyl is used to treat c. diff. I've been put on that antibiotic before while waiting for the stool sample to come back and it sucks. It has some pretty harsh (not permanently damaging) side-effects. I get put on Flagyl sometimes because I've had a history with c. diff along with my UC.

Flagyl helped me with c. diff, but when I took it while having a UC flare-up it did nothing other than make me feel worse with its crappy side-effects. But if you do have c. diff, maybe like me, you'll notice it help you with your BMs quick within the first couple days.

I had the most wonderful three week remission after taking iv antibotics for 3 1/2 days.  It was awful while I was actually having the antibiotics pumped into me, but a few days after I got home from the hospital all of the UC nonscense stopped completely.  Even the pain was gone.   I thought I was cured!  I think the name of the drug was something like zosin?  I ended up with a bad yeast infection though.
