Side effects from Colazal?

I have read through quite a few posts of side effects of various treatments for UC.

I have found that I could tolerate 4 to 6 Colazal but when raised to 9 I have had more gas, ringing in ears, sweating, nausea, and sometimes headache.  Does anyone have these side effects from Colazal or could it be just UC?

After adding Rowasa I am doing much better and seem to be heading towards remission.  Today the doctor recommended 3 Colazal a day 1X3 - and Rowasa as much as I can administer and retain up to the 4oz each night.  Hope it works!

I like how you added (I also hate UC) to your name, haha. Me too.

I just started Rowasa too, last night... How much do you manage to administer? I had to go really slow or else it got uncomfortable and made me have to go to the bathroom, but I squeezed and squeezed until it seemed nothing else was coming out, but then when I looked at the bottle there was a little less than half of the medicine left in there. I wonder if this is okay? I'm sure they want you to put it all in there, but I just felt like I couldn't hold anymore. Maybe it will get easier.

Anyway, as for the Colazal side effects... I haven't taken that drug in about two years, but the main thing I remember about it was that they got stuck in my throat every time no matter what I did and they would dissolve there quickly, causing severe burning in my throat and terrible tasting acid reflux. I do remember having increased gas, and I always get headaches, almost daily, so it could be the 5ASA's I guess.

I hope you're able to find something that works and get yourself in remission! Good luck!

edie - same thing happened with my first couple times with administering the Rowasa.  I have to do it on the toilet but that is working ok.  I thought I got a LOT in first time and was about 1/2.  My NP told me that is ok - get as much as you can retain overnight if possible.  The first 15 minutes is not easy but getting better - I suppose as the inflammation, etc. gets better too.

I'm glad to hear you are improving :) I have been on Colazal for over 2 years and at first I had an increase of symptoms, yes nausea, headaches and a floating (sort of a surreal) feeling. After I was on it for 2 weeks, the side effects subsided a little more each day. I say that you should try the least amount of med possible to treat so if you are seeing improvement from that combo then hey stick to it! :)

Thank you so much for bringing up the floating sensation!  I thought I must be going mad.  Now I know for certain it was caused by my 5-asa medications. 

Elaine,  Nausea was the only side effect I had from colazol that I was certain came from the pills.  I did not take them for long enough to see if the side effect would go away.

Elaine, I was having the same problem as you with taking 9 Colozal pills a day. I was experiencing nausea and extreme headaches as well. I believe as time progresses, your symptoms should subside. Good luck! :)

Hi - I'm new to this site, but not to UC.  I was diagnosed 15 years ago and have been prescribed just about everything out there.  I have been on Colazol 3X3 for several years now and tolerate it fairly well except for headaches.

Starting today - one Colazal three times a day and Rowasa every night (as much as I can get in there to stay).  Last night it was difficult and I almost had to "go".  I found that if you can "white knuckle" it for about 15 to 30 min. the URGE goes away and you can sleep, etc.  BM this morning was normal, size, color, everything - so far only gone once!  I am thrilled so far.  Most problem is left-sided discomfort - not pain but awareness.

I've been on colazal for about 4yrs. Headaches were the worst of it for me.
