bad breath

I used to have bad breath issues, not anymore since taking probiotics daily...which should be continued daily even while in remission.

I only need to take one a day and it seemed to help within a few days. I've also heard that eating 3oz of yogurt a day can keep bad breath at bay as well.

It also helps to brush teeth, floss, use interdental brush after eating, + mouthwash containing hydrogen peroxide-- especially if you're taking steroid drugs or other immunosuppressants. My dentist said: "Just think of flossing as a new hobby!" / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

i brush, floss, listerine, 6month cleanings, i have excellent teeth, just never had bad breath before and it does come when i start to flare!! So frustrating!! Thanks everyone!!

really pb4?  mouthwash with alcohol can worsen breath?  Why would that be?  I take listerine, maybey should start using my daughters which is alcohol free!! Hmm.....thanks for the info!!

It's called exactly breath. Your breath smells exactly like your bottom.

Hi, I was diagnosed with UC in 2001 and have been through it all from starting on sulfa drugs, folic acid, and prednisone..those worked but then as I built up a tolerance they did not. I moved to a larger city and switched doctors to get a second opinion on my condition as well as any new drugs i should be on. I was then given and have been taking Pentasa 500mg. and 6MP now for about a year and a half. I came across this thread as I was looking for any answers for this bad breath issue I have been having for the last couple of months. It has progressively gotten worse ever since I started taking the immunal suppressant. It seems as if other have the same issue. So what are some recommendations as far as fixing this problem. I have done my research a bit on the breath as well as intenstinal bacteria.

What do you guys think? I am 26 and am getting annoyed and reserved more since the breath has come about. After having my brother one night while we were out give me that look and say "darn! you need some gum"...I knew I had to start doing something about this.

yuk! That sounds kinda gross. I just looked it up online and im not sure if i can see anything in my mouth as far as symptoms of it but do know that it has come about pretty quickly i'd say within the last couple of months where i noticed a distinct difference in the smell of my breath. I mean..it went from good to bad basically. I guess i need to go to a dentist and see whats up. How long did it take to get rid of it once you were prescribed the medicine for it?

No dentist necessary, GI doctor should have no problem prescribing it.  Mine went away within a week of using Nystatin, but that stuff is f-ing gross.  It was worth it though!

Im sure probiotics/yogurt are good too but not the strongest thing...yeah, food tasted different, I dont know about stuck in chest, but it sounds related. I never had a medical problem in my life before getting diagnosed with UC...Now Im talkin Thrush, its so sad...anyway, I dont think that Nystatin stuff comes in a pill but Im not sure. Glad I could be of assist!

I don't think nystatin is that gross... it does look like egg yolks, but it's not thick... just real sweet.  I'm taking it now for thrush although I'm not sure that's what I have at this point.  If you do have thrush, your tongue would probably be white and you might have white spots inside your mouth, too.

It would probably help to brush and scrape your tongue, too, even if you don't have thrush.  I figure that when you're flaring, your whole digestive tract is irritated, and it's probably likely that there would be a less that pleasant odor from all that intestinal turmoil.

My tongue has had a white coating since April, maybe longer. When I was in the hospital I told them I thought it could be mild thrush and they gave me nystatin lozenges. I don't know if they helped because it became something I didn't really think about when worse problems were keeping me occupied and IV steroids causing steroid psychosis high anxiety in the hospital. When I first got out of hospital my own doctor said he thought the white tongue was result of anemia, I was anemic then. But I'm not anemic anymore and I still have the white tongue but my doctor doesn't think its thrush because he says that would be thicker and more cottage cheese-like. I wonder if the super nasty photos he sees in med books are just extreme examples and mine might be milder. But he doesn't really offer an alternative theory about it nor any treatment. I can't tell I have bad breath because my sinuses are stuffy. I live alone so no husband or housemate who would see me all the time and notice. No friends or coworkers have mentioned bad breath, not sure if that means there is no problem or that they are too polite to say so. I've been having some gum irritation and more cavities since I've been on the prednisone and 6mp so maybe the white is just some general bacteria. Time for me to make brushing and flossing more frequent hobbies! And I'm hoping that the health of my tongue and gums will get better when I'm off the prednisone, tapering tapering...
