Sorry, forgot the subject on my last post so I've cut and pasted here

Hi All, new member to this forum, but sadly not new to UC. Diagnosed  2/08,

was on vacation when all this started, awoke one morning, in the hotel bathroom,

was shocked/scared as to what was happening, colonoscopy 2 weeks later

mild case of uc/proctitis. For those of you who have anything more than a mild case, I can't imagine...

Currently on canasa 1000/mg 2x day. I've been doing

fairly well except 3 weeks ago started a major flair up, which continues and the canassa

seems to do nothing, very frustrating. I have an appointment tomorrow with my GI

Any suggestions/questions I should be asking tomorrow?

BTW, this site is awesome!

Welcome to HealingWell, skikraz. I deleted your other post to avoid confusion for everyone.

If the canasa isn't taking care of your symptoms, your GI may want to advance you to enemas, which can provide a higher concentration of medication to more of your lower colon, or perhaps even add oral medication. I'm glad you have an appointment soon to address this.

I'm sorry you're flaring again.  The ASA products always seemed to make my UC worse.  Unfortunately, it's a long road of finding what works best for you. Lots of trial and error and just figuring things out.  You might want to request the steroid enema (Cortenema), it works within a few days for me.  There are lots of options in the beginning, your doctor will probably recommend many different medications to try.  Good luck with your appt.

Thanks Judilyn and Glamourgirl for your feedback, saw my GI today put me on Lialda 2x day, continue with 1000mg canassa 2x/day and immodium if needed, follow up in 3 weeks, anything I should know about Lialda?

Hi skikraz! I am sorry to hear that you have been having problems. I had UC for 8 1/2 years before I was able to get something to control it. I had taken the Lialda and as far as the doctors were telling me, it's a stronger version of a medicine called Asocol. It did work for me for a little while, but I had a severe case. I have heard of it working for people though. I do know of some people, along with myself, where the medicine worked for only a period of time.
I hope everything goes good for you and that you are able to find remission and stay in remission.

Hi, skikraz! I was originally on Asacol and now on Lialda because I couldn't seem to remember to take all the doses throughout the day. I haven't noticed any difference between the two except for the convenience of only taking pills once per day. Good luck to you!

Hey skikraz,

Welcome to HealingWell, and you are right, this place is great.

You'll find out that UC is really a personalized disease. What helps one person, may not be effective for others. Lialda is basically the same thing as Asacol, just a different time-delivery mechanism, plus it is a lot stronger which makes sense since you only have to take once (or twice in your case) a day.

Have you thought about adding a probiotic? A lot of people have had success using them as a supplement.

Thanks everyone for all of your advise, I'm learning more everyday, once again this site is awesome, helps to hear from people
who are/have had the same experiences, probiotic is my next step

Went to walgreens and spoke to the pharmascist, he recommended Finest Natural 10billion CFU capsules, anyone know about these?
