Antibiotics for sinus infections

Since early October I've had pressure in my cheeks and my upper teeth, jaw and ears hurt. I think I probably have an sinus infection of some sort. I'm planning on seeing the doctor as soon as I can because I've been putting it off (which is so unlike me...) I know a popular treatment for sinus infections are antibiotics and I was wondering what you've been prescribed for a sinus infection. I obviously don't want to be put on anything that's going to upset my stomach and my GI is 2 hours away from me so I'm just wondering what antibiotics to look for.

I've never had to go on antibiotics for a sinus infection cuz I've never had one (boy that must hurt!) but I just wanted to add that if you're on antibiotics you should really find a good probiotic and you should actually take it daily and indefinitely since we IBDers tend to have bacterial over growth and since we are often prescribed antibiotics for our disease and antis tend to kill everything leaving our system that much more vulnerable.

A great one that I use is called primadophilus reuteri made by natures way, it has guaranteed intestinal release and it also aids with lactose intolerance, and high cholesterol and for women, vaginal health which can be essential especially when taking BC pills.

I recently took Cipro for a sinus infection. I did not have any adverse results and my Gastro said it "could" have an added benefit of helping the UC.

Cipro gave me horrible D - but everyone is different on how they handle antibiotics. General rule of thumb for Uc'ers is to avoid any antibiotics that end in 'cilian or 'cycline. I have always used the Zpack when I get sick and I've had no trouble with it at all. Sinus infections are horrible! I used to get them frequently when I was younger.

Yes, I just had a sinus infection and I agree that the Z-pack is wonderful...once a day for five days and you are done. It's powerful, but works quickly. I had no problems with it at all and actually requested it from my doctor because someone on here had posted about it. Take care and hope that sinus infection goes away quickly!

The other great thing about the Z-pack (Azithromycin) is that because you only have to take it for five days, if your colon acts up it doesn't have time to get so bad before you finish the med and can go back to normal faster.

I second or third the vote for Z-pak.  AND don't forget to up the probiotics or at least eat the yogurt with live culture.  I get D from cipro, amoxicillin, etc. etc. and found ONLY Z-pak was ok.  I had loose stool a couple days but nothing serious.MUCH better than the sinus infection!!

Thanks for the responses!! I have to see the health services clinic at my school and I'm just worried that they don't deal with IBDers much so they don't know what to do in my situation. I'm almost considering calling my GI just to be sure. I'll definitely look into the z-pack!

The MAYO clinic has implicated fungus in sinus infections, and antibiotics are NOT the first line of defense.....

I definitely wasn't saying that I will be treated with antibiotics. I'm saying that if it comes to that I want to know what to look for. Thanks for the info though.

I can take a z-pack & cipro. Levaquin really bothers my colon. My GI said that z pack, cipro & levaquin were safe for UC but Levaquin tore me up

You may also consider irrigating with a neti-pot - a natural way of treating sinus infections and allergies that's really gaining in popularity since Oprah featured it with Dr. Oz on her show.

This is funny because I went to my primary Dr today because I have an upper respitory infection and he gave me a Z-pack and also cough syrup with codeine. I was just getting ready to post a question about if the z-pack would mess me up or not??!! Good thing I read the repiles. :) I hope you feel better soon!

Kim - The Mayo Clinic researchers found fungus to be the cause only in chronic sinus infections (lasting longer than 3 months)...not in acute sinus infections (last a month or less).

"The researchers distinguish chronic sinusitis -- sinusitis that lasts three months or longer -- from acute sinusitis, which lasts a month or less. They say that the cause of the acute condition is usually a bacterial infection."

I'd still try the natural route (saline spray) or anti-fungals before using antibiotics. They are mycotoxins (fungal poisons). That's just me. Even if you don't suffer immediate ill-effects from the antis now, there could be long-term implications. Antibiotics do allow yeast/fungus to proliferate, so take a good probiotic as well.

I saw the doctor today. She gave a script for z-pack. I'm about to head out and find a good probiotic before I start taking it. Hopefully it helps :)

Thanks for posting that. I have Chronic Sinusitis and have tried everything but it keeps returning. If it's caused by a Fungus what do we have now to treat it thanks?

I'm not sure if natural antifungals would work also....like olive leaf extract, caprylic acid, oil of oregano, apple cider vinegar.

Taking the anto biotic biaxin for a sinus infection is what caused my first HUGe flare.
Now when i feel like I am getting any type of nasal congestion i use a sinus flush for a couple days. 2 years running now and I have not had any sinus issues. I sear by the sinus flush.

I can take Cipro or a Z -pack but not Levaquin. My GI also was surprised about the Levaquin. She said that is usually a safe antibiotic for UCers. It sent me into a mini flare.

so people like us should avoid amoxicillian? cause that is the only antibiotic that i'm comfortable with taking.

I've been taking amoxicillian for a viral/strep infection and I don't know if it's making me worse or not but I've been definitely having increased pain and bleeding.

A good saline sinus rinse is my first line of defense; as a matter of fact I used it for about two or three weeks before I finally resorted to getting antibiotics.
