It's very scary. I got c. diff. when I was pregnant and I hadn't been on any antibiotics. I have no idea how I got it. I had it for 3 months during my pregnancy, I had a horrible time getting rid of it. As soon as I had my baby, the c. diff. came back. I get it about once a year now.

Interesting article. When I was dxed with a c diff infection, the three questions asked of me were: Have you taken antibiotics lately? Have you been hospitalized lately? Have you traveled out of the country lately? The answer to all were "NO!".

We never really figured out how I got the infection, although the guess was that I had put some volunteer time in at an assisted living center a couple hours a week. At the time, I was eating lots of meat, and fast foods, which is not the cause, was definitely a contributing factor.

C diff is one nasty infection. It took two rounds of flagyll, and then two rounds of vanco to knock it out, and then 6 weeks later, after a relapse, another round of vanco (at larger doses than I had used before). I still get worried whenever I get some unexplained symptoms that I can't attribute to UC, but I've been c diff free for over 2 years now.

     What are the symptoms of C diff?  Does taking an antibiotic cause it?  Great, cause I am on Cipro for a sinus infection and currently in remission with the UC.

The symptoms are the same as UC symptoms. It's always hard for me to tell when I'm flaring if it's the UC or a c. diff infection.

One of the best ways to help prevent c. diff infection is by taking daily probiotics. Large doses of good bacteria can often colonize the colon and create an environment less friendly to the c. diff bacteria.

not to put a damper on it for you Sara14, but at the bottom they said it could just as easily be on a carrot! Which actually makes sense, since it comes from poo from animals in the "wild" that's in the soil, and the water.
It is scary, but i think it's one of those things we just have to get used to!
I got a c diff which started my UC up back in 1999. Then i got doing better and it came back and my UC came back and wouldn't go away. I ended up with my colon out about a year ago.
