The capsules are filled with tiny little beads, the reason I know this is because I would see them in the toilet lol. You can't open them up because the capsule itself is supposed to protect the medicine so it reaches your colon. I didn't have much luck with it but none of the ASA meds have worked for me, they seem to make things worse. Sorry you have trouble swallowing pills, I'm lucky in that I can swallow like 10 pills at a time so I take all of my meds in one big gulp..lol. Good luck with it, I hope it works for you!!!

Ive been on Pentasa for 18 months as a maintenance pill and they have worked great, apart from when i got lazy taking them and within a week was flaring , other than that great .

Yeah, what is up with these pills always being so large??!! When I switched from Asacol to Colazal I was in size shock! I couldn't believe how much larger Colazal was then Asacol. But honestly I find it better to swallow the Colazal because of it being in a capsule and it's much "softer" then a hard tablet. Glamourgirl is correct. You need the capsule because it will survive the stomach and make it's way to the large intestine where the medicine can then be released. Good luck with it. And remember that if this doesn't agree with you, you can always try Colazal which is a basalazide and not a mesalamine which Pentasa, Asacol and Lialda are. I can't tolerate mesalamines but I don't seem to have any issue with the basalazide.

hi i reacted to all of the 5asa group and was still told to take pentasa which was a satchet of granules slow release worried but confident at the time of my specialist took ONE satchet by that night i had had 50+ bowel motions and vomitted 20+ times was admitted to hosp and stayed 3 days being rehydrated so next time I will go with my gut instinct and question them like hell till im confidnt in taking something........good luck
