Yes, ediekirsten - Smoking makes me have to have a BM. Sometimes, I also have to go halfway through a cigarette. Smoking always made me have an urge (like maybe once a day) before UC, but now it gives me the BM urge far more often and the urge is stronger...before I'd be able to hold it and finish my cig, now not so much!

Taljones - I have been smoking for a bit over a month and my uc is vertually gone. I don't even take my meds anymore. I don't have the D, I don't have the lower stomach and back pains, my joints don't hurt, I don't feel neausaeated, and the list goes on. The best part is that my bottom and the back of my upper legs use to hurt and they no longer hurt/ache. In my case, and it still may be too soon to tell, we shall see, it has worked. I feel like my old self again w/ normal bowel movements!

Limeycricketlover - I am sorry that you are still suffering. It is truly amazing at how one thing works for one of us yet it doesn't for the other. This is truly an indivualistic disease whether it be smoking, food, or whatever. I wish you the best w/ your quit and am proud of you!

Ediekristen, before I quit smoking - coffee and a cigarette would make me have a movement! I know what you are talking about! However, it doesn't anymore - I just go one to three times a day which is normal for me and no D!

Guys, I will never recommend for you to start smoking again - it has to be your decision as to what you do w/ your body. I can't tell you what a difficult decision it was for me and at first (for the first three weeks) it was disgusting to me. Unfortunately, I am addicted again, but I truly feel I am in remission.

ive been smoking again since this last flare (about 4-6 cigs a day, sometimes less) and i tell you what... i am practically better now.
i only go a few times a day rather than 16+, no more blood or mucous. only poos that are pretty much formed, which still hurt by the way, so there must still be tenderness in my lower colon. but the cramping is gone once i go.

whether its from the cigs or not, i dont know, but all my other flares when not smoking have lasted so darn long.
now im better way quicker!

i think once im all good to go officially, i will wean off slowly rather than cold turkey as to avoid another flare.
we shall see what happens!

The only reason I do not smoke is my partner's fundamentalist disapproval and the fact I work on a nonsmoking campus. The cigs do it for me - they halt UC in its tracks. I first got UC when I quit years ago. Starting again a few times made things 1000% better, but I always quit because of the grief caused by others around me. This has made me a vocal critic of the antimoking movement, especially the second hand smoke propaganda, even though I do not have the courage of my convictions to just light up in my own living room. Sad, eh?

ediekristen; yes, i've noticed that as well. i'm trying to keep a journal of what i mean, drink and smoke. and noticed that about 1/2 hour to 1 hour after having a cigarette, that i do go to the bathroom, there is cramping going on as well and some increased bleeding too.  previous to my flare up, it is still happening now i smoke only about 1 to 2 cigarettes every two weeks or none at all since this spring of 08. when my flare started i thought maybe i should start up again, but now noticed it doesn't help any.

Gigi - aww, thanks!

Just had a chuckle at the thought of this thread - can you imagine your GI saying "8 out of 10 smokers have less UC symptoms". Lol!

Well the good thing is, since they discovered that smoking has a positive effect on the colon for UC, they are in the works of making a med based on this.

2 weeks. I started smoking in two weeks and felt much much much better
