hi,,i am 41 .....i was 27 and preganant when i first got it,,i get about 2 bouts a year....I have been on 40 mg of prednisone and usually i am responding by now,,,,,not to be gross, but when i go its white ,,(i belive mucous) ,,then sometimes like dirt at the bottom bowl,,,,,,the cramps are sooooooooo bad,,,,,,,,,,,My dr doenst think i need surgery, but i cant go on like this ,,,,,,,it is x-mas time,,,,,,ok so i started the meds tues,,,,,,,maybe i am in such a bad bout it will take a while?? god usually in 2 days im better,,i worry so much about colon cancer ............help..im so depressed

You mentioned that you started hydrocortisone enemas in another thread and yes, it should get your flare under control quickly. Hopefully anyway. What other medications are you on right now? Have your tried probiotics? What about pain meds for the cramping? Fiber supplements? What is the extent of your Uc?

Every flare is different so maybe it will take a little longer for the meds to kick in. This is a busy time for everyone right now and the stress could be contributing to the lack of response. I know how frustrating it is, but give it a little longer and in the mean time try to lighten your load if you have too much on your plate right now. This is supposed to a joyful time, so be on the look out for some for yourself.

I think we all worry about cancer, but I keep reading that we are only slightly more likely to get cancer from this disease, but are more likely to be diagnosed early because of all colonoscopies we have.

I think the "dirt" in the bottom of the bowl could be dried blood. I get it alot.

If your quality of life is imparied then it is your right to seek surgery. It's not up to your GI to determine when you are ready. I am not saying this to persuade you to make that decision now but want you to know that surgery is the patient's choice and it's elective.

     You need to give the medicine more time to "kick in".  Two days in not enough.

Hey Downs, I'm really sorry you're having such a hard time at the moment. Steroid tablets can take from 3 to 7 days to kick in. Even though you've responded more quickly before, there's still a good chance that they'll to have a positive effect. I know it's scary looking in the bowl and seeing something different and unusual, so you have my sympathy (that sandy gravel like stuff in the bottom of the bowl is just yuck). I'm just getting used to using the enemas myself, and had a real problem with the first one - think I managed to hang on for about 40 minutes before goop came pouring out. But since then it's got better, and I'm sure you'll find the same if you just keep trying every night.
My nan died of bowel cancer some twenty-odd years ago and I used to smoke a fair bit. Boy, was I scared when I first got this darn disease. Since being diagnosed and finding out about all the tests, and that I can expect regular colonoscopy, I've come to view myself lucky in having this disease in the sense that if I do develop bowel cancer, or even show signs of developing it, there's every chance it'll be picked up in plenty of time to deal with it.
Hope you can come to terms with the current flare quickly, and that remission comes soon, too. I agree with suebear that you have the right to determine whether you should have your colon removed or not. It's not a decision to be made lightly or too quickly, so I hope you'll give youself time to do some research and really weigh up the pros and cons. Maybe have a chat with your doc about some of the alternative drugs that can be tried beforehand as well.

just to let you know ... hang in there.

i had a flare that lasted a year and 4 months and the whole entire time til the last freakin day, i had blood (lots of it), mucous, cramping, diarhhea, cramping, pain, blood, pain, and i went like 20+ times a day.
i was a mess.
but im still here, alive and kickin!

hang in there. i know its a cliche, but you will be okay.
a few days is nothing.
im not demeaning those horrible few days in any way, but give it time.

and holidays will come and go whether your sick or not. dont be too bummed out.
i got married in the middle of severe flare with UC induced arthitis and i couldnt even where my wedding shoes. and try getting in and out of wedding dress 25 times just to have a fart and a little bit of blood come out. =)

thank you guys ,,yuo are all so great......I am a tad bit better,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i am suprised at all the meds,,,,,i guess i shld talk to my dr,,,,,i take prednisone and celexa,,,,,,and hyosycamine for cramping...................weird thing is i eat like a pig even in about!!! Do you really find the fish oil helpful??

well, this last flare i have been taking enteric coated fish oil (so it gets to colon), tumeric and vitamin D gels. and a few cigs a day.
and this flare has been so much shorter than the last ones where i wasnt taking any of it.

so i dont know which one it is or a combination or what.
but im pretty much better now, so i keep on it til it doesnt work anymore.
then try a different combo from there.

UC 10yrs-  having remicade 12/16 and taking prednisone

Hang in there. I hope you feel better soon. If it doesn't clear up with meds, get checked for c.diff infection......the black at the bottom of the bowl made me think of it....that is how my c.diff presented at first. Good luck and hang in there.
