Do you have gas and nausea with your UC? Or is that IBS?

Hello everyone-
I'm new here, and just want to say thanks to everyone for all the great info. I've learned a ton about UC after searching the site for the last while.
I've had UC for about 2.5 years, and have been on the roller coaster that you're all well aware of! I just had a sigmoid scope a week ago, and it showed inflammation for the first 30 cm. or so. I've tried Lialda, enemas, Colozal, Remicade, and pred, and unfortunately prednisone is what works the best. I'm about to start on Imuran in a bit to see if that helps. I've been on Remicade for a year or so, and it seems to have stopped being effective.

My main symptoms are mucous and urgency, with a feeling of a low-grade fever (without a high temperature). I also feel really "raw inside".I've never seen much blood at all. I also have loads of gas at times, with nausea. My GI doc never really acknowledges that, but it is a real pain (and one has to be careful with gas and mucus!). Do you all have nausea and gas as well, or is that more of an indication of having IBS as well? Also, do many of you experience the low-grade fever?

For some 10 to 15 years before my first Colitis flareup, I was always bloated and had lots of gas and diarrhea. I ignored it and kept eating and drinking the things that made me bloated and gave me gas and diarrhea. Since I was never diagnosed, I don't know if it was IBS or Colitis.

My IBS symptoms are a bit different, but I'm sure both are in play when we're flaring. Depending on what we eat and where the inflammation is limited.

My doc had explained to me that it seems the lower (in the colon) the inflammation, the more gas, bloating and discomfort. I definitely felt better when I had diarrhea (higher into the sigmoid) than with a more formed stool starting to flare symptoms.

I do get nausea, but it's not only when I'm flaring. I do get low-grade fevers very often...could be related to my body clock or some inflammation or the fact that I have early UC-related liver disease. It could also be the meds? don't know.

I do have success with 5ASA meds, oral and rectal. I'm just flaring at this time, and the tummy bloating/gas/discomfort was painful before I recognised the obvious flaring. Once the multiple bms started, the gut discomfort was less, but the butt discomfort/throbbing increased (as norm with my flares). I take an antispasmodic that helps as well as a half of a Gravol which is an antinausea med.

It's unfortunate you didn't have success with so many of the meds you tried....I hope the imuran works for you.

You could consider to use maybe suppositories to help with the urgency and rectal inflammation...either steroid or 5ASA.

A fibre supplement can help with some of the discomfort as well as probiotics and adjusting your diet to ease some of the discomfot (some can be caused by your food intake).

If you're ingesting any artificial sweeteners, I'd suggest you stop them.

Hello I am in a pretty severe flare and have been in the hospital for 2 weeks and counting...This has been the only flare where nausea has been a problem. I entered the hospital averaging 1-2 incidents of vomiting while needing to go or while going. I am not sure if it was becuase of all the inflammation or becuase I was dehydrated from the massive diarreah. Now I have been averaging 2-3 times a day with vomiting and now it may be becuase of the excessive amounts of medications they have me on or the fact that I am going 27 + times a day. So, I am starting to think that really bad flares will lead to serious abdominal discomfort along with nausea and vomiting. I am currently on Zofran to curb the nausea and vomiting. Your doc can prescribe it to you if your symptoms get worse.

Hi benjwl123,

My second flareup was so bad I was bedridden. I was quite nauseous due to being dehydrated. Some medicines also make me nauseous.

I was diagnosed w, uc and Ibs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I think when i have a bout of uc..i get so worried i get ibs,,,,,i still eat what i want so i have alot of gas,,,,,,,,I am one of those people that cant have...chicken broth ,,rice,,,,,it makes me worse for some reason,,,,,the nausea is common,,,,,,,,,ask for meds or take pepto,,,

Thanks for your responses. Quincy, or anyone, I was wondering what the antispasmodics do for you- are they to help stop urgency? If not, is there anything that stops that? And is that the Bentylol that you have listed?
Thats the most scary part of this for me- I'm afraid I'll be caught out of the blue and be in trouble. It makes grad school tough!

I definitely have nausea when I'm flaring and I've had nausea the last couple days even though I'm not in a full-blown flare. You can always ask for anti-nausea meds like Phenergan (sp?) and Zofran. I have Phenergan but it makes me really drowsy, so I don't use it. I found that drinking Sprite/7UP helps with the nausea.

Gas and/or nausea would more likely be from your UC, but it could definitely be a mixture of both the UC and IBS, however while flaring with your UC then I'd imagine most docs would say it's from your UC not your IBS.

I agree that the UC should be dealt with if that's the main issue....but there are meds such as antispasmodics that can help discomfort from both.

Spasming digestive system can cause nausea, that can happen in both UC and IBS, as well as with flaring, urgency, the spasming during pooing (to the point of pain to leave one exhausted) to the after -effects, the nausea and cramping can be incredibly intense I feel like I've been turned inside-out! shocked


I'm posting a great article on antispasmodics.  Of course, they're to be used in conjunction with treatment of a flare. For some, it might be contraindicated in a flare..depending on the symptoms I guess. My GI prescribed them, I always use my meds, and I don't use too many as to imobilise the colon..etc.
