Hello all....

I have my first appointment with my new GI specialist in two weeks, since being diagnosed with Proctitis 4 years ago...

Stuck to the Asacol tablets, but in the middle of bad flare that has lastest the longest so far...(since August this year). Am thinking that I need to push for more rectal meds to attack this thing from both ends..!

I know nothing about rectal meds, other than that the Pentasa suppositories that I have a few off don't seem to do much

....Im in Canada.....does anyone reccommed any rectal meds other than that? sorry to be vague...but I know nothing! :-)

Cortifoam works well for many and is much easier to use than retention enemas...hang in there this flair will pass!

Cortifoam...I will make a note of that! I know some people flare for ages, but it's been 5 months now and I'm fed up already!

I had great success with Entocort rentention enemas. Unfortunately you cannot get them in the US, but I used them while I was living in Germany. They are available there and I always had relief within two applications. You get a bottle of purified water, toss a tablet in it and shake until the tablet is dissolved. Great great stuff! I wish the Entocort enemas were available in the US. These are steroid enemas, mind you! I used them for years with no ill effects or side effects at all.

Yep, in Canada...Is Entocort the stuff you have to 'retain' inside you for at least 30 minutes? I've heard people on this forum say it's quite difficult! But I'm willing to try anything....

Actually, I was wondering if I could buy an enema type thing in a pharmacy somewhere....feel like I could do with a cleansing! Sorry if thats too much info! ;-)

Oh, also Scarlet....I notice you had your flare stary in August of this year too...like me! I've heard some people say they get flares at certain times of the year...August/September time is quite common apparently! Just an observation.. night night!

Salofalk retention enemas is what you should ask for initially. They're not that hard to retain for many, but some have difficulty.

I would suggest you stick with the 5ASA meds initially, and maybe use a steroid one later for a booster if you need it.

Go for the cortifoam, I've always had the best response to it and being a foam there is no leaking or worrying about retention.

     I have UP too and take the Cort enemas.  Right now I am in remission but the other day I had four bowel movements....not diarrhea or bloody, but "felt" something amiss.  After ten years you get to know your butt personally with this disease.  Anyway, I started back on the Cort enemas but also take Colazal.  GI doctor prefers Colazal instead of Asacol for patients with UP.  Seems like they treat the colitis which is "further down".

     Interesting that certain meds are not available in the US.  No wonder Farrah Faucett went to Germany for treatment of her rectal cancer.

I used the cortenemas too, (hydrocortisone enema). They are real think so easier to retain. No experience with the others except the rowasa. Thinner harder to retain them. Used just about every other homemade type also.

Mesalamine retention enemas is what I would try first. They have helped me many times. I think they're called Salofalk in Canada. They are called Rowasa in the US. It's the same medicine as the Asacol, but in butt-med form. =) Good luck and let us know what you and your GI decide to try.
