Think I made a mistake tonight. Girl friends son brought home fresh florida grapefruits over the holidays.  Never even thought about it till I did it...  Peeling and eating a grapefruit, like an orange used to be one of my favorite treats.  So tonight for a snack that what I did.  Now my gut is upset a little.  Wondering if this is going to get worse?  Am guessing so.  Okay everyone, tell me how stupid I was to eat that much fresh raw citric acid.  Anyone else had this experience.  I added no sugar.  Just straight fresh grapefruit.  Any ideas how much damage I just did?  Or am I going to skate by on this oops?

Hey Uncle Bubba...one can never tell. This is a good way to figure out what your body can tolerate. I can't drink a lick of orange juice, but mandarins don't bother me one bit and I eat a lot of them when they are in season. Lemons don't bother me either so maybe the fruit won't bother you like the straight juice would. Let us know how it goes. Take care!

unclebuba maybe the acid from the grapefruit is affecting your stomach and not your colon?

I limit my daily citrus to ca. 4 oz. of o.j.-- because it seems to go badly with 5-ASA med, at least for me. Grapefruit was never a favorite of mine, even before UC diagnosis. Way too acidic, fresh pineapple pretty much the same. Plus tall glasses of icy lemonade-- too much citrus gives me an angry gut. But, as Loneylane says, you'll learn by testing whether specific foods bother your intestines. Good luck! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

In case you didn't know, Minute Maid makes an low acid orange juice. It is the only orange juice that I can drink. Otherwise I don't like to eat oranges and mandarines etc. The pith (the white stuff around them) is grossing me out and I never manage to get it all off *lol*.

Unclebubba, I doesn't have to affect your colon. Maybe you have a litte tummyache from the fresh and raw fruit. You'll see soon, but I hope you are gonna be okay. Let us know how you are faring with the little citrus fruit "orgy" ;-). Who can blame you anyway? We are so deprived of foods that people eat on an everyday basis that one gets crazy not to splurge sometimes and eats the "forbidden fruits of UC".

I can't comment on certain fruits, but I have a definite problem with acidic foods (tomato sauce, etc.)

If it makes you feel any better, I did something even more stupid last week: I ate popcorn and peanuts! I caved in! And now I'm suffering the consequences! Hang in there ;)

Okay.... it was a mistake. LOL. its the next morning and I've been up 2 and a half hours and have had 5 bathroom trips. Definately the grapefruit. And I guess it just doesn't digest in my sytem anymore. Which sucks cause I really used to love the stuff. w. Since I have some stuff hat also sucks is the i have 5 pounds of fresh florida grapefruit and 5 pounds of oranges. Guess I'll give some to the neighbor kids, cause the girl friend won't eat all these. And I'm not going to risk that again. Get the temptation out of our fridge. LOL Since I have some stuff I NEED to get done this morning guess its time for the imodium.
