Ugh....colonoscopy preps!

I've just started the prep for my first colonoscopy. How miserable!! Has anyone else here used Moviprep for their prep? I was supposed to use some phosphosoda stuff, but apparently it was pulled off the market before I could get my hands on it. This stuff is no fun... cry

I don't believe any of the preps are fun. LOL.... but most seem to get the "job" done. LOL. U just should have switched out your toilet seat for a padded one. My back hurt like mad after all that time on the throne. Plus I swear next time I'm moving a tv and sat signal inton the throne room. I read a whole book and started on crossword puzzles. I was so whipped and bored sittin there. And My girl friend wouldn't even come talk to me to keep me company. ****.... oh well.

My husband lights scented candles! And then still stays far away...
Crossword puzzles also save me from boredom on the throne.

I just had a colonoscopy on the morning of the 31st. Yep it was no fun to do that on New Years Eve, but hey I had pans anyway. For my prep I had to drink this BIG gallon jug with powder at the bottom that you fill with water, it's called Golytely or Golyte I believe. I was also told that my "usual" prep stuff was recalled, that one is called Fleet's.
Was this the one you were talking about stewdoug25?
It was so hard to get that much liquid down, but it did work! Ugh! The Fleets had more of an awful taste than this Golytely stuff, but at least it was done and over with much faster. I bet many of you have taken this prep I have explained. What did you think of it?

Hang in there that Golytely really is terrible. Next time, you should definitely, mail order some Pico-Salax from Canada. It's way better. It's like a glass of orange alka-seltzer, followed by plain water the rest of the day.

I'm from Canada and I'll second the pico salax. Not half as bad as the horror stories I've heard. Just tastes like a bad orange gatorade....maybe with a bit of metal in it haha. Not enough to make you lose your lunch tho.

Although it is a bit wierd that the glass can heat up on its own as you stir it....what are we doing to ourselves lol smilewinkgrin

I suppose its too late for you to do this now, but here's my advice on making it more tolerable.  Chug as much as you can at once, then chase it with ginger ale or apple juice.  Don't chase with too much - just swish a little around your mouth to get that awful taste out.  Hope your colonoscopy goes well.  Good luck!

Yes, it was Fleet something or other, LoveAngels. And I agree, anything that is less to drink has got to be better! no matter what is tastes like. With moviprep, they make you drink 32oz in the PM and next AM. I guess they are all grueling preps, just because of what they do.

I would really have liked to use that orange stuff from Canada you all are talking about, but I doubt my doctor her in the states would be all about me ordering that. They seem pretty strict on the prep they want you to use unfortunately. But maybe I will try next time!

I hope my colonoscopy shows the damage hasn't gone further up my colon, like I suspect...

When I used the Fleet phosphate enema, it made me feel really unwell. I became hot and sweaty and vomited. The side effects went after an hour but it was a horrible experience.

I had my second colonoscopy on Dec. 4, 2008 after a break of almost 16 years between tests to give you an idea of how I felt about it. For the first test in early '93, I drank the gallon of Golytlely and literally thought I was gonna die. I had chills and violent shaking.

This time I used the Moviprep because I told my doc I could not drink all that stuff. It was like night and day! Not bad at all. Here are some hints to make it easier. Have your prep prepared and in the frig ahead of time. Have your extra water there in the bathroom ready to drink. When it's time to start drinking the prep, keep the container in a small cooler to keep it cold throughout the whole time you're drinking it. Most important, have a bottle of mouthwash so you can use the mouthwash in a separate glass, drink the cold prep through a straw, and then immediately wash your mouth out with the mouthwash again. I found the half gallon of Moviprep so much easier than a gallon of Golytlely.

     In the hospital they gave me magnesium citrate (I believe that is what it was called).  It tasted like ginger ale, not bad at all!  Of course when I took it I was almost all cleaned out anyway.  It was the sixth day of my hospitalization and I was being fed through a pic line, so don't know why I even had to take anything.  I was practically cleaned out to start with.  Usually I take the Golytely...if you stick to a liquid diet for three days prior to taking the prep you only have to drink like 1/3 of the stuff.  Not bad.

Hi all,

I am from Ireland, had to take fleet for my first colonoscopy got very ill. Used Picolax for the last one, was much better didnt taste to bad andmuch more tolerable. You only have one glass to drink (well one morning and one evening) and lots of water afterwards.

I also had my colonscopy this past Monday. I was suppose to do the Fleets phospha soda but was told they had recalled it on 12/18/08 because it causes kidney damage. I ended up doing the pills....32 in all. The pills were not that bad - I had to take 4 in 15 minutes until I had taken 20. The other 12 I did the same way 4 hours before the test. Definintely cleans you out...Then on Thursday I had to have a CAT scan and had to drink the "berrie smoothie" and have the IV. What a week....

The assistant of the first GI got my symptoms, did an external examination, and penciled me in for a colonoscopy. She had me go to the drug store and buy this BIG gallon jug with powder at the bottom. I was supposed to fill it with water and drink it. At the time, I was in no shape to be able to drink a jug of water. Luckily, that GI didn't cover my insurance, and I had to go elsewhere. My new GI could tell right away that I was in no condition to get a colonoscopy. He said my colon felt like dog meat. He never did have me drink that big jug of water, even when he did give me a colonoscopy. He instructed me to use over-the-counter enemas instead.

As for the previous GI, he is still trying to charge me for the consultation with his assistant. No way am I going to pay it.

I have had 2 colonoscopy/endoscopy combos with GoLytley the first time (years ago) and MoviPrep this past Christmas Eve. Both taste the same IMO and very nasty. However on both of them I only got 6 of the 8 glasses down. It eventually started coming right back up.

I asked about whatever the new pills are but he said the pills can sometimes scratch up the colon and he didn't want me to take them. He seemed to only use the pills for "check-ups".
