Is it necessary to get the promethius testing prior to starting 6mp?

I have no idea, but I can tell you this.....my GI doctor didn't send me for that prometheus test until I was already on the 6MP for about
six months!!!

The Prometheus test can check for certain enzymes to see if you would be a greater candidate for 6mp or Imuran. It can also show if you lack those enzymes because if you do then you won't be able to take either meds.

I took it a few months after being on it. It is supposed to judge if you are taking too much or too little.

You might want to run these by your insurance first. I had trouble getting mine to pay for the tests and they pay for just about
everything.

I did the test and I am glad I did because I can't take it - my insurance didn't cover $85 worth of the test...

For the initial Prometheus test, I had to pay $65 out of pocket but the Prometheus Metabolites tests I don't have to pay anything because according to my insurance that is considered a "maintenance" bloodwork.

When my son had his first Prometheus (sp) test, the doctor drew the blood, and sent it directly to California, or wherever the lab is. We could never get insurance to pay because it was "out of network". The next time, and a new doctor, we were sent to a local hospital that took the blood, and sent it to Prometheus, but somehow we paid the hospital (in network) and it all worked out. We paid a small amount, as opposed to the entire bill.

I did not check beforehand and it was out of network. I called the customer service # and explained the necessity of this test and they did an override and paid it. As I recall 3 tests were ordered for a total of about
$895? if I recall correctly. Happy we didn't have to absorb that bill.

wife of redbull. The doctor was doing this prometheus lab every 3 to 6 months the insurace said it would not pay they said it was exploratory and they would not pay it cost right at 300.00 my ins stuck me with 275.00. I told the dr not to do this lab so often it is to expensive I told him what the ins said he got alittle upset he saidthat he could right a letter and fight it but I haven't bothered I told the Dr just do reg Lab work and not Prometheus so much he agreed and I'm still paying on my prometheus lab. Good Luck. Ps it is a good complete Organ panel lab work so it is necessary to do it.
