Ive just been diagnosed with Ulcerative Proctitis afer having had a colonoscopy , but i am a bit confused as the the results showed definite inflamation in the rectum but also some slight inflamation in the transverse colon. I have read on many websites that colitis only spreads in a contiguous way and doesnt appear in patches. I wondered if anyone else has had this happen to them .

My Uc started in the rectum and moved its way up - first to the transverse colon and then eventually all over. So yes, it is possible to spread. Nip it in the bud- if you can.
Good Luck

Yes, proctitis can spread; several people on this forum can attest to that. UC is supposed to spread in a contiguous way, but from what I understand, there is a rare form, Crohn's colitis, that can be patchy. Have you specifically asked your doctor whether your colonoscopy showed a) inflamed rectum, normal descending colon, and slightly inflamed transverse colon; or b) inflamed rectum, slight inflammation extending into transverse colon?
Hope you quickly find a form of treatment that works for you, and welcome to the forum!

Crohn's colitis is patchy inflammation (CD in general is patchy with healthy tissues in between) with UC the entire area(s) will be inflammed, not patchy...if you have patchy inflammation that coincides with CD not UC even if you have inflammation in your rectom as with CD it can affect the entire GI tract (anus to the mouth), UC is limited to the colon/rectom.

Unfotunately yes it does spread. My inflammation has gone from my rectum (about
an inch) now up my left side about
7 inches.

I've had UC for over ten years now. When admitted to the hospital last May the CT scan showed inflamation throughout the colon. However, when they performed the colonoscopy six days later it showed only inflamation in the rectum.

Yer I was diagnosed with just Proctitis a year ago, but a flexi sigmoidoscopy a few weeks ago showed the start of some inflammation a few inches further up.

I've had Proctitis since 2000. the right diet(for me) and getting enough sleep has helped me a lot. Has not spread, so it doesn't have to with you either. good luck.
