stressed need help to avoid hospital

finally got to see the doc this afternoon he is concerned with my condition:the bloody D 7 to 10 times,severe left sided pains,lower back pains,just feel down right awful and sent me to get labs done to check med levels in blood. not sure why? he then told me to take zanax along with reg meds, was upped to 30 on pred yesterday,along with oxycodine for the pain. he informed me that if no changes in my condition by noon on the 20th he wants to admit me back into the skull hospital skull . this freeked me out I really dont want to go back for another stay. I have been drinking ensure for two days to try to get flare under controll. It seems nothing I do will help. At this point I am willing to try anything! I feel so down I just dont think I can keep fighting this!

Are you using the rectal meds?

I know - but together with the Remicade it might be what you need. They did nothing for me before the Remicade - but after I was on Remicade and I was using the enemas twice a day I got into remission. And have been there ever since.

I would try at least 40 mg of prednisone before I would give up and be hospitalized.
I get worse when I don't eat enough, are you sure you can't get something solid down?

You might want to stop drinking the Ensure. This is horrible, for some, while in a flare. I know when I tried it, they about killed me. Too many sugars in it I think. Try to stick to a more bland, low residue diet such as chicken, fish, rice, very ripe bananas. If you can't keep solid food down, resort to babyfood.

I don't understand what Xanax has to do with your flare? I take it occassionally for anxiety, it takes away the urgency I feel when I'm going to leave the house but it doesn't actually do anything to heal the UC. Also, it's very addicting and should be used with caution, especially if you're taking oxycodine too. I would question your GI about this. Instead of the Rowasa enemas, maybe you could try the steroid ones. You might have better luck.

I would like to comment on the Xanax.  I was taking small doses for anxiety before diagnosed.  When put on prednisone 40mg. my NP told me to take max dose of Xanax to help with the moody/mental part of taking prednisone and relax me more.  It, of course, does not heal but STRESS is so much a factor in flaring (in my opinion) in my case - it is helping  a lot.  I can't take the narcotic pain relievers so I don't know the consequences of them together but my husband takes Xanax for anxiety, Zoloft for depresion AND Norcor or pain due to back injury and post traumatic stress and is doing just fine at age 73.  No doubt he is addicted but that goes along with it.

Thanks for your insight Elaine. I love how Xanax helps with my anxiety, I wish it did more for my bleeding. lol. :)

I too almost went to the hosp. I Knew what it was and went to my DR. I told her to put me on pred. I know I dont like the side effects, but I dont have insurance anymore. She tried to start me on 10mg. after a week I told her I need at least 40 too start. That has helped a bit already. Only been 2 days. So we will see. She also gave a pres. for Asacol but I have to wait until Cobra kicks in. So darn expensive. Sux being laid off, that's what started all this.. Been in remission for several years before the lay off.

     So sorry to hear you are suffering so.  Has your doctor ever mentioned taking 6MP along with the prednisone?  Was wondering why you started the Remicade before trying Imuran or 6MP.  I also have to start my prednisone dosage at 40 mgm before it does any good.  Doctor tried starting me off at 30 mgm several times last year but I would always relapse when weaned off.  Not until he started the pred at 40 mgm with a 10 mgm per week taper that I was FINALLY able to get off the drug and into remission.

     I also agree with Sherry.  I couldn't drink that Ensure while flaring.  Had to stick to a low residue diet.

Christine - I actually started Remicade before 6mp because it works faster - and I was trying to avoid a hospital stay.

     Mamas Boys....I am not a candidate for Remicade.  I was exposed to the TB virus while working in a lab back in the 60's and tested positive for it on the skin test.  I do not have active TB and my chest xray was negative but the doctors say it is dormant in my system and Remicade could activate the virus and it could have fatal results.

Will the COBRA benefits in the stimulus bill help you? I think they are supposed to pay 65% but I don't know when it starts. Well, that's another thread, I'll check into it.

well thanks for all the info doc was trying to keep me out of the hospital due to my request I do not think at the hospital my insurance covers you get care worth a poop on the weekends. Been there alot last year!! I am not doing much better but got enought meds to hold out till monday morning. he gave me the meds to try to get enough comfort till monday morning. I will have a list of questions i get from my fellow UCrs for monday mornin before hospital or new treatment he really wants me to hang in there to get my third infussion of remicade it is really conforting knowing all will try to help if they can this site is all i have due to not knowing anyone else that has experienced UC thank yall bunches

I was told by my doctor that Remicade can take about three infusions before a change can be seen, and some on this forum say about 5. I saw some positive change with the first two, but then quickly regressed back into a constant flare. I went 8 weeks between infusions one time and that was horrible...we tried six before my 4th infusion and then four weeks before my 5th, which was just a desperate attempt to give me any kind of relief prior to surgery.

As for the stress part...definitely try working on maintaining your mental health. Stress is a HUGE contributor to flares and the severity of them once they're active. Medication is a wonderful way to help maintain that stress and evil thoughts. : ) I like Paxil and if that's not enough then Effexor is pretty amazing!

As for the foods...I really stayed away from high lactose dairies, fiber and spicy foods. Along with nondigestable foods such as raw veggies, lettuce, corn, broccoli, anything with small seeds...oh and sugar. : ) What did work was rice based foods...rice milk, rice cereal...just rice in general. : )
