What brand of fish oil & multi is good?

Hello,

This is a question for anyone who is taking fish oil and or multivitamin...

What brand/kind of fish oil and or multivitamin is good for someone who has ulcerative colitis?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Carlson Super DHA. 1 bottle lasts 6 months and gives 500 mg DHA in one cap. I don't really do a multi consistently. I try and focus on getting that in the diet.

Hello, I just let you know what my GP doctor told me last week. For fist oil, he said to take Nordic Naturals or Carlson's. For multivitamin, Catalyn by Standard Process Inc. He said Catalyn is food base vitamin.

Yup, nordic naturals or carlsons - both rigourously test their products for toxins such as heavy metals using outside testing facilities.

This is a question that I can finally answer.  I researched it  for quite some time because I wanted to make sure I was not "pooping" away my money  and found out about a 3rd party who certifies fish oils. The IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) does rigorous tests on fish oils and they post the results on their website.  I therefore went with Life Extension brand because they had a 5 star rating and were the biggest bang for the buck.  Nordic Naturals also had high reviews.  Check out their site. http://www.nutrasource.ca/ifos_new/

As far as a multi, I am still looking for some independent study.

Where did you get the Life Extension from? It's roughly $55 more than the Carlson's 180 bottle container.

I know Carlson's is a well known brand but I only compared the prices of the fish oils reviewed by the IFOS. It does not appear that Carlson's submitted to the testing. If you go to the IFOS website it will list the 5 star rated brands and the scientific approach to testing them. IFOS seems to be the only independant organization that reviews Fish Oil. I got Life Extension through their website www.lef.org for $24 a bottle (120 softgels). Each serving (2 soft gels) has 2000 mg of Omega-3. Just looking it up now, Carlson's has 1200 mg in 2 softgels. Vitamin Shoppe has 120 soft gels fo Carlson's for $18.80.

Carlson has 72,000 mg of Omega 3 per 120 container
Life Extension has 120,000 mg of Omega 3 per 120 container

Therefore you get 1/3 more Omega 3 in the Life Extension Brand for 22% more in price. Life Extension is the better deal (by my math :-)) and it comes with the IFOS seal (more important to me). I would use any of the brands on the IFOS list but I found this brand to be the best bang for the buck (and I like how informative their products are). I am a fanatic about what I put in my mouth and what I spend my money on (Ok..I am frugal). I hope this helped and was not to boring.

Yeah, I just wanted to see how you were comparing. I was looking at Life Extensions DHA version, think its dha 240. I look at the content of DHA and not the content of overall fish oil. I can't find any brand better in price for that. I've used Life Extensions stuff before and was definately satisfied with their stuff.

I use Super Omega-3 EPA/DHA with Sesame Lignans & Olive Fruit Extract (Molecularly Distilled) because this is the product that was tested.
