lidocaine??

Does anyone have any information about using licocaine topically for induciing remission? Apparently there was a doc up in Toronto who advised an aquaintance of mine to try it - not sure how she got it up there or what brand she used (I was told that it was over the counter) but aparently it worked well for her. l heard this third hand so my details are hazy. I do know that it is not a routine treatment.

 

I've used it for hemmies as well (didn't do much to kill the pain), but I can't see how it would help UC, as it's just a topical pain killer.

Joma, I used xylocaine (lidocaine HCl) a year and a half ago as enemas to induce remission. If I recall correctly, they were made by AstraZeneca. Here is a link to a thread that discusses them. I had a prescription for them in the hopes that my drug plan would cover them, but it didn't. I think you can buy them OTC.

Joma, if I recall correctly I had a prescription for a 2 month supply of xylocaine. I think I used them nightly for a month and a half and then tapered with the remaining couple of weeks worth. I had a set back after I finished them - I switched to salofalk enemas for maintenance every third night and they seemed to cause bleeding. I'm using budesonide enemas every 3 or 4 nights for maintenance now.  I haven't used the xylocaine since - mainly because it's not covered by my drug plan and costs over $10 an enema.

peverroad, I did not make the enemas myself - I had a prescription for them. There was a member who was making them using lidocaine HCl, water and a thickening agent. I have no idea where he ordered the lidocaine HCl powder from. This is something you should probably run by your GI before you attempt. He may want to monitor your blood to see how much lidocaine is being absorbed so you can stop treatment if levels are too high and prevent side effects.
