Never stop bleeding...

Hi! I was just wandering if someone had the same situation. My UC doesn't really bother me a lot. I have 1-2 times BM pretty formed everyday. No pain or anything...However, every time I go to the bathroom I have blood and mucus for a year now. It never stops! My GI says that I have to start Pred., but I'm scarred that even if it help, symptoms will be back as soon as I stop. Not my choice! Does anybody know any other ways how to stop the bleeding? I just don't want to go farther on the drugs... shakehead

It seems that your inflammation would be very low in the rectum, maybe if you used suppositories, that could help. The Canasa?

Are you still on the cortifoam?  for how long nightly?

One of the side effects can be thinning of the mucosa, that could be part of the reason for your bleeding.

It sure would be nice for you to get some relief.

yes, last time when I had colonskopy, it showed like an inch of inflomation in the rectum area. I use canasa for a week now, but there is no effect. Plus, I always confuse it with hemorroids blood. I don't use Cortifoam (trying to stay away from steroids). What is the best for rectum area? I heard it the hardes to heal.... rolleyes

yep, that's what my doctor states as well. You could consider a hydrocortisone suppository, less steroid than the enemas.

If you're using the Canasa...you could use them twice daily, one in the morning and before bedtime.

spluxa - I had continuous bleeding for about a year until I went to prednisone.  However, I tried and failed at all mesalamines, steroid enemas, etc. before going to prednisone.  After a year of trying I finally gave in to prednisone since either I was allergic to meds or they weren't working.  Don't give up yet!  Try everything first - and give it time.  If you see even a little improvement that is going in the right direction.

I have tapered to 20mg. prednisone now for two weeks and started 6MP about 8 days ago.  Today bleeding returned after being gone for a month so nothing is certain.  Mine is also confined to small rectal area.  I see doc next week.  Hoping he will add a steroid suppository as those work best for me to administer.  I do want to get off prednisone someday but if I can't - that is the way it will be - one day at a time.

Jini Patel Thompson's book Listen to Your Gut has dietary recommendations to help stop bleeding. I've found l-glutamine and George's aloe vera helpful for gut healing.

     Try the Cort enemas for a week or so..once in the a.m. and once in p.m..  If you still see blood, then by all means go on the prednisone.  It isn't good to be bleeding all the time.

I have very similar symptoms - same amount of blood and mucous every time - always right before stool passage, accompanied by gas.  Then, once that passes, it's my normal bowel movement, soft, but reasonably formed for me...

me too, constant bleeder here... same as you, TestFlyer- initially pass blood & mucous a couple times, then it's soft formed stools, then I'm pretty much done. Sometimes thruout the day I pass mucous a few times, but no blood. My GI knows about it...he didn't suggest pred, probably because my last pred course was less than helpful. I don't know how to stop it. I suppose enemas, they haven't stopped it for me, but I don't use them regularly. It's just become part of my "normal" daily bathroom habits. I expect surgery will be sometime in my future, so I'm no too concerned with it. Either it'll stop, or it'll get much much worse & I'll go for surgery. Either way, I'm alright for now.

Suppositories, enemas, steroid enemas, steroid foam enemas - I used all of these and sometimes they would help but everytime I stopped them I would almost instantly start bleeding again even after slow tapering. I am an easy bleeder - always have been. I've been anemic more times than I can count. That is one of the reasons I am on 6mp.

OK - red - why do you say that is why you are on 6-MP (bleeding/anemic?)  Just didn't quite understand.  You also take Colazal, right?

I was placed on 6mp because I couldn't get off the steroid enemas without being thrown into a flare - which in turn made me bleed and become anemic from losing too much blood. And because I couldn't get off the steroid enemas, the doctor put me on 6mp.

And yes, I'm still on Colazal but it wasn't enough to keep me from flaring.

I don't bleed. But I have red, ribbony stools together with well-formed stools in a BM. Sometimes I see a pool of "thick blood" underneath the well-formed stools. And the blood doesn't dissolve in the water and turn it pink.
What does it indicate?

My NP told me that most likely the "thick" blood is blood mixed with mucous from the rectal area ulcer.  I have that too and rarely red, thin blood (sometimes on TP).  She says very "normal" with proctitis.  I have that first BM in mornings usually - comes out first so in bottom of toilet.  No blood after that!

No wonder my GI doctor didn't seem to be concerned when I told her I saw "thick blood" almost everyday.

Im on 6MP too but im still having problems...seems every time i start a new medication it works for 6 months then stops working now....i go to the toilet up to 10 -20 times a day no actual BM just blood and mucus...and gas of course....

The Cortifoam has very little steroid absorption, and therefore few typical side affects. Don't fear it. It is easier than the liquid enemas, and quite helpful for rectal bleeding.

I too have been bleeding since last January! Hospitalized twice already. I am now on 6MP and have been on it since January 20th. I thought by now the bleeding would stop. I wish I had an answer. I too am scared and frustrated.

Wishful - are you still on prednisone?  Don't you just hate it when things seem to be going pretty good and OOooppsss!

I am on prednisone 20 mg. now third week and bleeding returned yesterday after 4 weeks without any and feeling pretty good.  I am to see the GI doc next Monday.  I was hoping yesterday was a one time but blood on stool again today - formed, etc. but mucous w/blood - darn!  Just takne the 6MP for 10 days so, of course, no help there - seems like yours should "kick in" soon.

I was wandering, why taking drugs if they are not helping??? :((( All of us take soooo many pills, and still suffering...HATE IT!

I am sorry to hear that Eliane. That pretty much happened to me when I tapered down on the prednisone. I started to bleed again. My GI decided to continue the taper and get me off the prednisone and because I am taking the 6MP. I am just frustrated right now.

I also have bad pains in my left side...and I just read some posts...can this be pancreatitis? Now I am worried...

were you tapering the cortifoam or stopping it abruptly?  Tapering could help, then you could find a maintenance dosage.

Probably not your pancreas - which is behind the stomach on right side.  Is left pain very low.  That is where I have it  - left-sided proctosigmoiditis (what a mouthful).  Keep track of it and discuss with your doctor.  ElaineNY
