Have to say whenever I have a heavy night out on the beer I always suffer for the next few days.  I got away with it for the first year or so but not now.

But another quite interesting piece of information, my wife recently undertook a series of colonic irrigation visits.  The Doctor there advised that in most cases of ulcerative colitis flare ups that she knew about were where the person was suffering extreme stress and many of these were having affairs.

Regardless of having affairs, any kind of emotional or physical stress can exacerbate symptoms/flares...for the record, alcohol is hard on the colon and would likely be considered physical stress on the GI tract which can easily (for many) induce flares.

Oh My!  If the part about "affairs" were true, there would be a much higher rate of UC in the world!

I guess the doctor just happens to know many people who have Ulcerative Colitis and are having affairs.

I've gotta say that having UC would make me LESS likely to ever have an affair...

Is anyone else not a little bit offended by what this doctor said??

Stress is definitely a major cause of a flare. This one for me was anti-biotic use.

No affairs here but I'll agree that most of my flares are caused by a combination of stress and diet, bad diet being the first ingrediant/irritant with the stress being the actual trigger. 

And yes, I find that odd that a doctor would lump all stress with affairs.  There are lots of things in life that cause stress and not many of them involve affairs.

     Well...I never had an affair but my ex  son in law cheated on my daughter and I got a flare!  The SOB should suffer like we do...but apparently he is healthy as a horse.  He eventually married the bimbo he cheated with, however, the honeymoon has been over for a long time (this happened over six years ago) .  They had a kid a few years ago and he is up to his old antics...going out with the "guys".  Guess a leopard never changes his spots.  By the way, my daughter is doing very well without the loser.

Stress definitely contributes to my flares.  Affairs - couldn't tell ya - happily married over here! :)  And yes - fruitgirl - I am kinda offended that the doctor said that.

thanks for the replies, apologies if the "affair" part offended anyone, just mentioned it as she was dead right as far as I was concerned. A silly mistake, my wife found out and the guilt and stress was incredible and what a flare-up. Only got myself to blame, i am sure that the Doctors assumption is not entirely correct, but stress certainly is a cause. Best regards.

Affair??? Oh yeah, just want I want to do while I'm flaring!!! LOL Nevermind the stress of the affair, I would be more worried about the stress of an accident!!! LOL It's very hard to feel "sexy" while you're running to the bathroom 20 times a day, sometimes without making it to the bathroom!! LOL Last I checked, Victoria's Secret and Fredericks of Hollywood didn't sell sexy Depends!! Am I missing something here? For some reason, I find this absolutely hysterical!!! LOL My mind is going in a million different directions or "positions"!! LOL NOT POSSIBLE!!! NO WAY!!! I have to stop thinking!!!!! ROF****!!! Maybe the stress is from people wanting to have an affair but can't! Alright, I MUST STOP NOW!!!! LOL

Fremen "Afflaire" sounds good - lol. Of course when you do have a major flare - you don't really want to be in anyone's company, just the loo with a plentiful supply of bog-rolls. I have gone back onto Prednisolone 40mg and the results are almost instantanious, bleeding stops, stomach is easier, also my skin appears much clearer, no spots, rashes. However, the Docs don't like to keep you on pred for too long because of the long-term side effects, so it's a case of grin (or grimmace) and bear it.

I don't think I would put any faith in what is said by a doctor who puts her education to use operating a colonic irrigation business.

Punishment for an affair....a flare couldn't be agonising enough! And your wife is still with you..congratulations.

Maybe your wife mentioned it and the doc was just making her feel better...

I guess it wasn't mentioned if it was more men regarding the affairs or women...

The whole statement seems weird....

Yes stress (generic word isn't it? but definitely subjective) is a factor in my flares...sans affair.

Quincy, I am lucky my wife is still with me, no-one would care for me as much as she does. She didn't mention it to the Doc. she hasn't mentioned it to anyone. So the Doctors comment stunned me as is was so true (in my case). Best regards D1

eventually, we learn to accept and value the things we have....even if it's from the other side of the fence (unfortunately)...and this is meant in a generic sense.

Regarding affairs, my first husband thought it was OK...the resulting feelings never leave...yes I forgave the first time..should have left, even though I was only 19 and very stupid. The others made the divorce nice and simple. You know what? The second wife had the need to write me after 15 years of marriage and say I was right that he didn't change and had left her and their 4 kids for a younger woman. Equally naive. Eventually the Catholic church requested an annulment from me so that she could marry him without guilt I guess....I laughed. Some men never change, and if you have, I hope your wife realises you are truly sorry for what you did. That will go far in the trust issues.
