Opinions, advice, answers? Please!

Hi there,

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in Aug 08. Since then I have been on three different types of medication. The last two weeks have been terrible. I haven't been able to work, I have severe cramps, cant sleep, am dry-retching and I am losing blood like there's no tomorrow.

 

I am now noticing lots of white-ish/yellowish stuff in the blood too. Can someone tell me what this is? I saw my specialist yesterday and he wants to do another camera up the bum thing in two days. He took blood tests, but I called today and they said the doctor would have to discuss my results with me when he sees me next.

 

I am concerned. I know so many of you have experienced horrific times, but as a fairly new person to it, I am really worried.

Hi Teacher1980....I was diagnosed in July. It really is scary stuff in the begining. When I started seeing the mucus I was so afraid it was pus but after tests was assured it was just mucus which is the way the colon protects it's self when inflammed. Unfortunately it's just part of this DD as is the blood. I have only been through 1 major flare,and it's no fun at all but as you learn what meds work, what foods to stay away from and such it will get better. It is true that some people don't get better and as a last resort have to resort to sugery. That was what scared me most in the beginning. It's only a small percent that are so unfortunate.
Hang in there. It will deffinately take time to figure it all out and might get a little overwhelming at first as you learn that everybody is different in how UC affects them. It will take a bit of trial and error but you will eventually discover what your body needs to get well.
These guys are great and very knowledgeable. Hang in there and things will get better.

Hi and welcome to Healingwell :) Yes, being newly diagnosed with this is a scary time indeed! Even though I've had this for a while now I still remember the early days like they were yesterday.

There is one medication that we take that can turn the mucous yellow and that is Colazal. Is this one of the meds you were on? If not, then yes it can be pus but the white stuff is definately mucous. Increased mucous production can be from the foods you eat. Your colon is in already agitated state and some foods tend to aggravate it. What we can't say because we all respond differently to different foods.

Are you on any probiotics?

Hi teacher welcome!  Are you only on the prednisone?  No oral Solafolk with that?  Being newly diagnosed is definitely a nerve-wracking time.  Never feel bad for asking questions.  We've all been there.  Glad to hear that today was a better day. :)
