Dear All,

Has anyone had a hormone scan? I've been suffering from fatigue, memory problems, excess weight even though I don't each much, etc. Is this a common feature among us UC sufferers?

I don't even know what a hormone scan is? Fatigue is definately a sign of Uc. As for the rest it can be sign of so many other things. Are you male or female? Have you ever had your thyroid checked?

Your symptoms could be related to thyroid. Is that what you meant when you said hormone scan?

Those do sound like symptoms of thyroid deficiency. I think that can be determined by routine blood test. It's a common health problem in the general population. Whether IBDers are more prone to it is an angle I've never heard or read anything about. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Dear All, I'm male and I've been trying to understand my symptoms. I was wondering if all that prednisone I've been taking and the stress of UC to the system can mess with the other hormones. I haven't been tested for thyroid hormone levels, but I think I should.

I think hormone scan is a part of procedure involved in thyroid scan.

A thyroid scan uses a radioactive tracer and a special camera to measure how much tracer the thyroid gland absorbs from the blood. A thyroid scan is done to find problems with the thyroid gland. A thyroid scan may be done to check for thyroid nodules, or it may be done with a radioactive iodine uptake test (RAIU) to check how well the thyroid gland is working.

A thyroid scan can show the size, shape, and location of the thyroid gland. It can also find areas of the thyroid gland that are overactive or underactive. The camera takes pictures of the thyroid gland from three different angles. The radioactive tracer used in this test is either iodine or technetium.

Before a thyroid scan, blood tests may be done to measure the amount of thyroid hormones (TSH, T3, and T4) in your blood.

I had a hormone-producing tumor on my pituitary gland. It released massive amounts of prolactin. Finally my testosterone level was so low I had sexual issues which prompted me to have blood work, then an MRI. The tumor was removed with an endo-nasal procedure 2 years ago. My levels returned to normal. I have tried to see if there was a link to my UC and my tumor.... I want to believe that the tumor could have caused my UC....but dont have anything to back that up, and the doc's will not tie the two together. The surgeon who removed my tumor said it was probably there for a long time... I still wonder if there is a connection.
