Mesalamine Enema. Has this ever happened to you?

When I first got UC, doc put me on these(along with Asacol) and it worked fine.  Now I had my latest colonoscopy(lower colon UC) and he told me to do the enemas for 3 weeks.  Ok

I did one the first night, and all went well.  Last night I did it, and woke up before dawn having to run to the bathroom.  Right as I sat down blood came spalshing all over(sorry to be so discriptive).  Now I have been having spasms, and passing blood all morning.

It has now finally slowed to a standstill.  Could this mean I can't use them any longer?  Should I try one more night and see what happens?  They never had this effect on me before.  Has this happened to anyone else?

I've never that happen when I could use Rowasa but maybe you should try it one more night to see what happens. If the same thing happens tomorrow morning definately call your GI.

Yes, I get that a lot when I'm flaring.....it makes a mess on the toilet and I have to make sure it's cleaned right after I go or it'll stain.

Stay on the enemas for the 3 weeks and make sure you taper them....one day and a normal for flare bm while using 5ASA enemas shouldn't yet cause you the decision to stop them.

It's a norm for me when the stool isn't formed...and with this last flare I had it a lot even though my inflammation is clearly low in the rectum.

Hang tough....

You can also change your intake of food to limit the amount of gas that's produced throughout the day and that might ease your morning bms.

My take on it is that it's normal based on my 20 years experience of using them.

You did make it through the night....a HUGE plus.

Oh..the spasms will be because you're flaring.....antispasmodics and diet change for a few days could help.

Wow, I am sorry to hear that, that sounds so hard for you. I have tried many of the retention enemas, I personally have not had that happen to me. I suffer from proctitis and UC to sigmoid area. Hope this gets better for you soon. The spasms and gas can be a problem. That's what I have been experiencing. My Gastro doctor told me that gas in the lower intestines is not helped by gas x, but when the gas is down low I take charcoal tablets, which really do seem to help

Oh, yes-- I just had a pile of trouble from generic Rowasa a couple weeks ago. It definitely aggravated a flare in my sigmoid colon. My gastro advised me to stop using it & stay on Colazal, which (thankfully) is working. I'm wondering if the preservatives in the mesalamine enemas caused my problem. Prior to this scary experience I used original Rowasa for about 12 yrs off & on, plus the generic for ca. 3 yrs and they always helped me to get back in remission. But with UC things can always change for the worse ... alas. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently fighting off flare in sigmoid colon)
