Kidney stones, anyone ever have one?

I read that they are common for UC suffers. I had an abdominal CT to check for perforation and they found a 6mm stone (pretty good size from what I've read).
It is still in the kidney so I have no idea how long it takes before it will drop into the urethra and start causing pain. Anyone know?
Is there anything they can do while it's still in the kidney?

Last thing I need is more pain!

I don't have UC but I have had stones. Yours is on the larger side (mine were like 2-3 mm) There is a procedure called Lithotripsy (sp?) but I have heard you don't want it done unless you absolutely have to. The stone is broken up during the procedure and then you pass it. Ouch. There is no set time line - you could have it sitting in your kidney for months or years.

Hope you aren't in too much pain :(

I have had kidney stones throughout my bout with UC. I recently went to the ER with major kidney pain....after a CT of my kidneys, and an ultrasound, I was told both kidneys have multiple stones...and that I am a chronic stone guy....nice.... I passed one the other day into a strainer....it was huge...not sure of the size yet - it is in a specimen container getting ready to be given to my urologist. I had bad kidney pain, nausea, and felt overall sick for a few weeks until it finally came out... The kidney pain and bleeding was on-and-off....

If the stone is too large to pass, you can get it blasted via lithotripsy....I had that done once....its painless except for the catheter...that is another story....


Drink cranberry juice, and also lemon juice...I was told that can dissolve your stone a bit.... Get 100% juice, not the fake sugar drinks.... Keep hydrated!!! Drink lots of liquid...

If the pain gets too intense, get pain meds....It can get to the point of vomiting, so be sure you are prepared ahead of time if you can pull it off w/ your doc.

I went to the ER after having the flu for a week...because I had sudden really horrible pain in my left side... ended up having one kidney stone in my kidney and one already on its way down my Urethra.... they hurt like a b i t... thank GOD for Vicodin!

I have had stones on and off for 9 years.(still have them on both sides.) Even before UC. I have had 3 lithotriposy with no tube put in to pass stones after. All procedures were painless, and I never felt the fragments pass.
There is no pain greater than a kidney stone on the move.

Yes! I had a 6mm too ! My GI also said KSs are more common in UC patients. It had to be removed through my Ureatha - they put you OUT of course...
It was terribly painful - Dilautin and Vicodin just took the edge off of the pain. My Doc basically said I'd never pass a 6mm - it would be horribly painful - I'm glad they did the procedure to remove it, it was painless.

Now I drink plenty of water and squeeze a lemon it - not a wedge, like a 1/2 a lemon...and always have plenty of organic Lemonaide around.

i've had 2 in he past year...to add insult to injury i drove to the er at 3 in the am for the 1st one AND RAN OUT OF GAS!!! I had to stand there doubled over pumping gas just to get there! horrible! the 2nd one passed about 10 minutes before i was going to head to the er...i kind of figured what it was that time so i wasn't so scared.

Was your stone already causing you symptoms when this happened?

I'm wondering how long it can stay in the kidney before it will come out to torment me! Maybe I'll get lucky and it will never come out? I wish!

My stone didn't cause any problem until it started travelling from Kidney to bladder - that's when I knew I had a problem - I have no history of KS's - a good friend, had just had o bout with them about 2 months prior - so when my back started getting that knifing pain - I called my GI - and he said they are more common for UC folks. Before it got too bad I had my wife drive me to our ER. I stongly suggest you preemt any attack with meds and a game-plan in case your stone starts to travel.

By the time I was in the ER - I was in excruciating pain - and we all know the wait time at most ER's...thankfully i was hooked up to an IV when I had one wave of the KS attack - and the Dr. on call administered some pain med to my IV. I hate to think what THAT would have felt like if I was just at home or on a job-site. Point is, be prepaired. Have a plan and pain meds ready to use incase things get ugly.
